Cambridge University Bowmen
BUCS Outdoors
A successful day at the BUCS outdoor student championships with Cambridge University Bowmen showing that it's still one of the strongest teams in the country. Both teams narrowly miss out on medals. Particular congratulations to Carrie Oliver who takes an individual medal for Ladies Recurve for the second year running and also to Tak Ho and Caroline Sandford who set new club records.

In case you were wondering we are the university's archery club. For those less knowledgeable, that means we spend our time, like Robin Hood, shooting arrows at targets. We consist mainly of students from the university, both undergraduates and postgraduates. We shoot each week during term time and on an occasional basis outside term. Members of the club regularly shoot at tournaments with both university and other archery societies. The club is actively geared to recruiting new archers who have never picked up a bow before. If you're interested in trying out the sport then read on...
The club has its own equipment that is lent out to members who don't possess their own bows. This way beginners can try out the sport without having to make any initial expensive purchases. In order to have a go, all beginners have to do is turn up at one of the clubs shooting sessions. We also try to attend as many tournaments as possible, most of which are very friendly events that welcome beginners. What's more, if you take up archery then you could shoot in the Varsity Match against Oxford during the Summer term, an event which is over fifty years old! If you're good enough then your score will count for the team and you just might get a half blue! Archery is one of the few university sports where an absolute beginner can progress over their stay in Cambridge to represent the university. At many tournaments, there are also specific novice sections.
What's more the club has a social side as well. We have a regular pub night each week and various special events throughout the term. Furthermore, at many tournaments we spend time socialising with our fellow archers from around the country. It's a good way of escaping work pressures in Cambridge and getting out and about.
Now for some details...
- We shoot indoors during the first two terms at a distance of 20 yards.
- In the Summer we move outdoors to shoot at distances of up to 100 yards - but don't worry the targets are bigger!
- Archers of all standards are welcome. Members shoot both recurve and compound bows, I've even seen the odd longbow for those aspiring to be the next Robin Hood.
- Experienced members of the club are always at hand to provide coaching and advice.
- We'll let you try out the sport before asking you to join the club - just turn up at a shooting session. That way you can decide if you'd like to take archery up.
- We specialise in target archery where we score according to how close we shoot to the middle of a target at a known fixed distances.
