The Assassins' Guild Lent 2004 - Rulings and Clarifications
Monday, January 19th
- If you are waiting outside a society meeting for the room to be
unlocked, etc., you are not out of bounds.
- All corridors are considered to be "water with care" areas
unless otherwise stated, including those outside "full water"
rooms. This means that you cannot fire a large water weapon such as
a CPS into a full water room if you are standing in the corridor
(obviously, firing through the window is fine).
- The restriction on shooting through letterboxes, etc., only applies
to locked doors, since the Umpire expects attacking assassins to be
intelligent enough not to stand in front of the letterbox anyway.
Wednesday, January 21st
- There have been a number of armed robberies in Cambridge recently.
Players are reminded once again to behave responsibly with anything
that looks even remotely like a real gun, which probably means not
using them in shops at all. Remember that even though your gun has been
painted to look like a toy this may not be obvious to a CCTV camera.
If you are killed because someone attacked you in an inappropriate
manner, the Umpire will probably disallow your death.
- The Umpire hopes that this was obvious already, but
rule 1.2.6 has been added to clarify
that the use of brute force has no place in this game, and that, for
example, pushing open the door of a player who is trying to hold it
shut is not allowed.
Wednesday, January 28th
- Mobile phones cannot be used as any kind of weapon, so everyone
please quit asking.
- In general society meetings take place in rooms, and anyone leaving
the room is in bounds, unless they have a special reason to do so
related to the meeting. If the arrangements for a society meeting are
of the form "assemble in place X at time Y" then place X is
out of bounds at that time as soon as any of those responsible for the
meeting have arrived. People who are obliged to wait outside society
meetings to let other members in are out of bounds.
- Theatre auditoria are out of bounds for everyone during and
immediately before and after performances. People working on a show are
out of bounds in the theatre whenever they are doing so, while
rehearsing, building set, etc., but if you are taking part in a show
during the game the Umpire would appreciate details.
- ADC Club Night counts as a society event for the purposes of being
out-of-bounds. The ADC bar is in bounds at all other times.
- Players are reminded that you should not get innocents to open your
mail for you, and doing so will probably make you wanted.
- People pointing someone out to an ally are considered to be an
accomplice to the attempt in that this makes them a legal target for
the person being pointed out if they are seen.
- Attaching detonators to arbitrary objects does not make them into
bombs; for example, should you place a detonator under a package
already in someone's pigeonhole they will not die if they are touching
the package when it goes off. Using your own letterbombs is obviously
fine.
- Bombs on a target's door which go off when the door is unlocked or
the doorhandle turned are not allowed.
- The rules said this already, but since players have been asking about
it the Umpire will reiterate that pushing notes and letters under a
locked door is allowed, since the recipient is at liberty to
ignore it. The Umpire knows that everyone is capable of being sensible
about this and will not be impressed if people try to argue that this
includes "letters" which suddenly sprout guns and start
firing at the target, or anything equally silly.
- To clarify very slightly: Police should not accomplice attempts on
non-wanted players or pass information to players which would give them
an advantage in the game except where it relates to the potential death
of a criminal. Should police officers be present at a confrontation
between players, they may shoot anyone displaying a weapon just as
anyone else may.
Sunday, February 1st
- This is something of a special-circumstances ruling, but: should
non-players steal weapons from you and attempt to hold them to ransom
you may apply to the Umpire for special authorisation to use deadly
force in recovering them.
Friday, February 6th
- The Umpire would like to extend his congratulations to John Haigh
and Elisabeth Cumberbatch and requests that all assassins refrain from
killing one another at their engagement party on Saturday.
Saturday, February 7th
- For reasons of sanity, the Varsity Match planning meeting today is
out of bounds for all assassins while they are there or while they are
immediately arriving or leaving.
Tuesday, February 10th
- At the request of the management, the shop Games & Puzzles in
Green Street is now permanently out-of-bounds. Buy your weapons there
without fear!
Saturday, February 14th
- The Assassins' Anti-Valentine's Dinner this evening is out of bounds
for people in and immediately outside the restaurant.
