In October 2002 the first Cambridge University MPhil in Engineering for
Sustainable Development began and I was pleased to be among the 14 students
taking part. These webpages host the coursework that I produced for the
course along with the dissertation material that I am currently researching.
It's unfortunate that so much effort is directed towards defining what
sustainable development is when we can all see that we in the developed
world have caused an enormous number of environmental and social problems.
Climate change, ozone depletion, biodiversity loss, excessive resource
consumption, inequity, inequality, and lack of political access are just
a few. These are issues that really need to be addressed and for which
we must seek solutions. These solutions may not always take the form that
we expect and that is why I believe a creative and innovative approach
is necessary. During this course I think I have started to recognise how
changes might be brought about and I hope that I can help "save the
world" in the course of my future work.
