STRANGE BLUE NEWS

FRESHERS' WEEK - PROGRAMME
Posted: 1.OCT.2007

Fellow plastic-lovers (*ahem*), as I'm sure you're aware, Freshers Week is upon us! This means we have one week to seduce / cajole / kidnap as many freshers (and other people who have not been "indoctrinated" into the frisbee-loving world) and with a combination of impressive skills, impressive socialising and subtle forms of mind-control, make them think we are the coolest thing outside of Fonzie's underpants. For this week only, we will therefore be having multiple practices / beginner sessions / gratuitous opportunities to show off, as summarised here, in Chronological Format: The Format Of Champions (TM):

Tuesday, 2-4pm (ish), Parkers Piece - Matt Shannon (the loveable rogue) will be showing of his, yours and anyone else's skills on Parkers Piece, to coincide with the Freshers Fair (see below if you're manning a stall). Please come along - the more people we have, the better we look and the more people stop and go "MY GOD YOU CAN THROW A SIDEARM YOU MUST BE REALLY GOOD IN BED". Bring your SB tops if you have them, to mark yourself out as an Ultimate Guru.

Thursday, 6pm til dark, Jesus Green - pickup! That's right, we're straight into a game. This isn't a freshers event, but I still hope to see loads of people there.

Thursday 10-11pm Kelsey Kerridge - First Schmindoors of term! If you're an indoor lover or you have a particular (legal) love of freshers and other people who can't throw, this is the one for you. It'll cost you £1.50 to temporarily become a KK member (no discount if you're a KKK member either) and £1.50 for the club to cover renting the hall.

Friday 3-5pm Jesus Green - Beginners Session. This is the first of three beginners sessions which we're running to get people hooked as quickly as possible. I could do with as many people as possible coming along to help out - I realise it's during the day and some people have (urgh) work, but it would be really good to see loads of blue shirts making us look good. We'll be hitting the pub afterwards to get the little rascals utterly socialised, and I may even be buying pints for helpful people if I'm not feeling too cheap.

Friday, 6-8pm Leys School - Advanced session. If you want to play high-level Ultimate and represent the SB student or open teams, come along. It'll be £5 with an astro card, or £6 without but you should be able to buy them there (£20 per card, good for 8 hours of astro). Ladies and gents both welcome.

Saturday 12-2pm Jesus Green - Beginners Session, same as above. Townies should find it easier to make this one, so please come along and help out. With a few notable exceptions, it wasn't that long ago that you lot were all beginners, so it's always good to share some of the "frove" (thankyou Kelly). There will be pub after this as well, so you may be spotting a pattern here.

Sunday, 11-1pm (ish) Jesus Green - main practice of the week! There'll be shed-loads of beginners here too, but if we get loads of experienced players we'll split the games up so that people still get to show off and play some high-level stuff. That gives you lots of incentive to bring all your experienced mates along. Pub afterwards of course - we're experimenting with a new "defined finishing time" approach which means that we don't all leave in dribs and drabs after practices, so around 1-1.30 we'll be packing up and heading to the pub to get to know our new club-members.

In addition to the above, coming up on the social calendar are the ever-popular Freshers Curry (pencilled in for October 15th - Mike's working on it) and Paul "Ice-Cock" Robustelli's house party on the Saturday the 13th October. Put a mark in your diary - it would be great to see loads of people there, and Paul's house is literally *on* Jesus Green so we can all whip out the LED discs and glow rings and run around like pillocks in the dark.

Freshers Fair - many many many thanks to those people who replied, I love you all. Platonically. Important information is that we're on stall T13, upstairs in the Fenners Gallery. Wear your SB tops and if it's anything like last year you skip the queue by going in the side entrance and saying you're on "stand T13, Ultimate Frisbee".

Thankyou all for reading to the bottom, I appreciate that there was a lot of information in there. If you're a townie don't forget this is the best time of year to bring all your mates along - this week isn't just about student beginners! Don't stand for the old "but I can't throw" excuses - drag them kicking and screaming. We can arrange help in this regard if they are particularly attractive.

Nightnight...

Chris
