Torben began his musical career as a talented French Horn player, performing with youth orchestras across the UK and Europe. During his teens he discovered jazz and, influenced by Louis Armstrong, decided to pick up a trumpet, soon joining the jazz orchestra Just in Time. It emerged that Torben was destined for the spotlight, however, when he began singing Mack the Knife during a rehearsal and quickly found himself fronting the band. At the age of 18 he was off touring to Gibraltar and later to South Africa, performing at the world famous Mount Nelson Hotel.
Despite the obvious musical talent Torben decided to pursue his academic ambitions, going up to the University of Cambridge to study physical sciences. Eventually he would complete a PhD in philosophy and get a job as a Research Fellow in History and Philosophy of Science, working on a historical project called the Science of Musical Sound.
Torben is a self-taught singer and during his time at Cambridge he has built an impressive reputation as a jazz vocalist, running his own professional groups and fronting big bands across the country. Torben is also a talented songwriter and will soon be releasing an album containing a selection of his own songs.
