Cambridge University Players and BATS are proud to present a bold new revival of the Tony-nominated Baby at this year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Featuring a brand new adaptation of the original Broadway libretto, Baby at the Fringe is a 75-minute abridged version of the original two-act show, created in close collaboration with the acclaimed lyricist and original director, Richard Matlby Jnr.
David Shire and Richard Maltby Jnr are a formidable writing team, having worked on three hit shows over their long careers, working on shows such as Closer Than Ever and Starting Here Starting Now. Their individual work also spans an impressive back catalogue, including Maltby's lyrics for the Broadway sensations Miss Saigon and Lloyd Webber's Song and Dance. Between them they have won numerous awards including both Emmys and Grammys, as well as Tonys.
Baby broke new ground in Musical Theatre with Sybille Pearson's applauded book telling of the reality of pregnancy for three ordinary couples. The true-to-life stories are evoked brilliantly through a combination of pathos and comedy and, of course, Maltby and Shire's toe-tapping tunes and show-stopping numbers.
