Voralberg Variations

25th March 2007

Having moved the layout to a warmer and brighter location with adjustable spot lights I thought it would be fun to take some new pictures.  Alas the scenery is still very much a desert but at least the lighting now makes the locomotives a vivid red colour.  Catenary will appear eventually and I might even feel adventurous enough to weather the track (although leaving the layout in the damp of the garage for about five years seems to have done this!).  Here an ÖBB Rh 1116 with IC train to Bregenz passes an unoccupied DB Br 185 mehrsystemlok heading towards Innsbruck:

The Fleischmann Br 185 (7385) has bright blue-white headlights and both it and the Minitrix Rh 1116 (12730) have super detailing:

The EC 164/165 'Transalpin' heads towards the Swiss border via Feldkirch with two Rh 1116s in current and pencurrent liveries.  The first coach of the train is one of the famous SBB panorama coaches - this is quite usual as the 'Transalpin' is often a mix of Austrian and Swiss rolling stock:

Here the yellow headlights of the Minitrix Taurus are clear, along with the non-prototypical front buffer/chassis area.  The Hobbytrain Taurus is better in this region of the model even if some flash needs removing.  An SBB Cargo Re 482 is loitering near by, the skulking Br 185 in the background, perhaps they will be put on a cross Alps freight soon:

Fleischmann have really produced brilliant models in the super detailed Re 482 / Br 185 models with very quiet flywheel drive on axles and exceptional pulling power and not to mention an irresistible four pantographs:
