more mind mapping

Kathy Sierra on the importance of using mind maps (as opposed to a linear format) and drawings when taking notes and why this is hard to do using a (non-tablet) computer. (Thanks for the link, Daf!)

I’ve said it before—we need a mind mapping program in GNOME. If people like Kathy are considering buying a tablet PC and running Windows just so they can use MindManager and include sketches in their mind maps, we’ve got to think about how we can make this experience possible under GNOME.

(A side note: I’d love to be able to write equations on a tablet PC and have them automatically converted into LaTeX. That, as part of a mind mapping program with an “export to LaTeX” facility, would totally transform the way I work.)

You might want to take a look at freemind, if you don’t know it already.

  2. Thomas Says:

Indeed, it is a great mindmapping program.
Besides, it seems to have some latex export plugin :

There is a freehand-to-latex program, http://www.cs.queensu.ca/drl/ffes/ . Last time I tried it, it was a bit clunky, though…

A while ago we were experimenting with some Tablet PC software for converting ugly lines drawn with a pen into pretty lines: http://stat.columbia.edu/~jakulin/ASSAI/ — it comes with the source. The undergrads who were working on this found it rather challenging, though.

    export to LaTeX? definitely:
    apt-get install kdissert
but took hordes of KDE stuff

take a peek at vym, too.. smallish and MindManager-ish. I’ve tried freemind but doesn’t suit me..

    Hi Hanna,

I had a contract at MS awhile ago in the Tablet PC group. They have an app called OneNote that I thought was fairly usable and well designed. It doesn’t do mind mapping very well, but it was good for some of the more basic aspects of taking notes such as bullet points under paragraphs and filing away pages and so forth. But both that sort of thing and mind mapping could easily be recreated.

The one thing that MS does have that would be very hard to create is good handwriting recognition. I think any serious effort to write free software for tablet users must take that into consideration. Maybe something similar to Graffiti (as used on Palms) might be possible.

Sven Herzberg is developing a handwriting recognition engine. He also has a wiki for Gnome Tablet Tools:

There’s a Wiki page on this issue:

I’ve suggested that one could take Freemind and build a pretty Gnome UI on top of it - using Cairo for drawing. One should also integrate with Evolution Data Server to create tasks, memos etc. This would be a powerful application.

I’m pretty skilled in Java, but I do not known all that much about the Gnome/GTK APIs. I would like to participate in such a project if anyone started it…..

Definately need at leasr some freemind comparability, it’s really nice… all my friends and I use it on linux and windows
(Wel actually it could be a bit better with some gnome love in the gui)

I also agree that we need a really good mind-mapping application for GNOME. I would like to see it be more flexible than a typical mind-mapper though. I’m a very big fan of Microsoft OneNote, and I would love to see a tablet-oriented note taking application like that for GNOME. I also highly recommend that you look at the latest development version of BasKet, a KDE note-taking program that is modeled after OneNote: http://basket.kde.org/development.php

Definitely, we need a mind-mapper. I’d love to help with a project if we can get a group of people together.

    Hi,
    Hmm… except that I don’t have a pen-capable computer, that sounds pretty interesting. ;-)
What I’d also suggest is some kind of presentation/teaching application. Especially when teaching, just going through slides sucks. Using the laptop as a powerful “whiteboard”, that can e.g. store printouts/replays, recoginize formulas or text or show some animations, do some calculations etc. could be very useful.
Last year, when I was in Berkeley, I attended a class on computer vision. He usually used Mathematica for the lectures, the folding/unfolding capabilities were quite nice, and he could just modify some parameters and get updated results etc.

I’ve just noticed a lot of entries to the Psycho project website from that address. It almost look like there is more people getting there from Hanna’s blog than from Gnome website.
Anyway - big step in Psycho. First graphic view.

I do not know if you are still reading comments on older articles, but it is worth a try. :)

Instead of using windows, looking at fellow OpenSource projects might be an idea?

    LaTeX export inclusive BTW. :)

As a Mindmanager addict and user of Kidspiration and Inspiration
I follow with interest this discussion. I would love to get out of Windows. I need a big visual symbols gallery as well as mindmapping/concept mapping facility. In the meantime, do any of you guys know about this? Looks like it would be brilliant for meetings. (Editor: can you insert this for me? http://www.selwyn.co.uk/Pen+Input+Solutions )Note price!

  20. mum Says:

Just to say I’ve been further researching the DigiMemo (see it at http://www.selwyn.co.uk/Pen+Input+Solutions/Digimemo+and+Software/Digimemo+A402), mentioned above. It’s an A4 size digital pad that can link with your computer and weighs in a just over a pound. It’s good for meetings and situations in which you want to concept/mind map with others, but don’t want to use your laptop. You can store the files in your computer and the MyScript software (optional extra) does handwriting recognition. The price (under £130 for both) is amazing. (And the good news for you cool Linux users can use it with this software:
    http://www.etes.de/opensource/digimemo_a501_converter_linux/en )
It’s a lot cheaper than investing in a tablet computer. I’ve decided to give it a try and will report back. Btw, I am NOT(knowingly) a spammer.

I use a software programme called Spark-Space - the really good feature about Spark-Space is that it creates a structured linear document from the map. The software has full text input ability as well as all the features you would want from a mind mapping tool. you can ee it at http://www.spark-space.com
