If by “Brussels, Belgium” you mean you were at FOSDEM, you were in Elsene (Dutch name) / Ixelles (French name), which is part of the Brussels Capitol Region, but not part of the city of Brussels itself. OTOH I agree that this is a confusing technicallity & even we Belgians name it Brussel / Bruxelles / Brüssel / Brussels most of the time… ;-)

I was at FOSDEM, yes, but I was staying right in the city of Brussels (near to the Grand Place), so I think writing Brussels is correct.

@JanC: I work in Brussels (Belgium) and am Dutch but I’ve never heard of Elsene (or Ixelles for that matter). Brussels is what we call it…nothing else!

It would be interesting to take these “Year in Cities” postings and add to them the total amount of carbon dioxide required to travel to all the different places.

    http://www.climatecare.org/britishairways/index.cfm

A round-trip from New York to London requires 1.25 tons of carbon per person on average according to the British Airways site. New York to Hong Kong is almost 3 tons.

A few trips like that a year and you’ve lost your right to sneer at SUVs.

    utterly unrelated (again)
    but
had you come across this site before?
