grow little margin, we gonna solve AI

I’ve just returned from NIPS 2005. The conference was great, and I hope to post more later about my favourite papers, posters and talks. The highlight of this year’s conference was undoubtedly Jeff Bilmes, Michael Collins, Koby Crammer and Fernando Pereira’s summary of their workshop on structured learning for text and speech processing. Fortunately, I captured the entire thing on video for the enjoyment of the machine learning community (and anyone else who’s interested). So, without further ado, I present Jeff Bilmes (bass), Michael Collins (sax), Koby Crammer (bongos) and Fernando Pereira (vocals) performing “We Gonna Solve AI”.

For those of you that wish to sing along at home, the lyrics are:

Summertime, and the learning is easy.

Our problem is structured,
And the accuracy is high.

Your funders are rich,
And your colleagues are good-looking.

So grow little margin,
We gonna solve AI.

Wintertime, and the learning is #-P.

Our speech is recognized,
But we don’t know why.

Our code is in MATLAB,
And our data’s synthetic.

So grow little margin,
We gonna solve AI.

[*] sung “sharpee”

    Excellent of course.

Someone complained to me that it wasn’t bright enough, so I ran it through this:

    mencoder -oac copy -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:nr=2000 -vf eq2=2:1.1:0.05 2005-12-10_nips.avi -o bright.avi

Those settings were guessed and could probably be improved. Also I guess the audio could also be compressed, but what I tried didn’t work immediately, so I gave up.

Oh yes, for those that haven’t heard of sharp-p:

    excellent!

    and an offering

    God rest ye merry physicists
    With space and time combined,
    Preserving fields of particles
    By cosmic rays maligned,
To save us all from gravity when grants are running low…

    CHORUS
For tidings of superstrings of joy, strings of joy,
For tidings of superstrings of joy.

    Non-fermi liquids fill our glass,
    Polymerically sublime,
    Non-equilibrium our branes
    Will gauge the merry rhyme,
To save us all from gravity when grants are running low…

    CHORUS
For tidings of superstrings of joy, strings of joy,
For tidings of superstrings of joy.

    To all experimentalists
    We wish you photon speed,
    Detecting Higgs and superstrings
    So theorists can procede,
To save us all from gravity when grants are running low…

    CHORUS
For tidings of superstrings of joy, strings of joy,
For tidings of superstrings of joy.

Hanna, Thanks for the video. When was this held? I was at the workshop but missed this great event.
