Welcome to new Graduates

Dear new Graduates,

I’m delighted to welcome you all to Cambridge and Girton College! This must be a very exciting and demanding time as you prepare for your arrival at Cambridge.

I have included links to several documents I trust you’ll find useful and that will hopefully ease your transition to a new culture and community during the first couple of weeks:

- A copy of the Graduate guide which you will also receive in print. (link)
- A copy of our provisional freshers week event card with activities we have organised for you. (link)
- The Girton College prospectus. (link)
- Printable maps (link)
For early arrivals, it will be worth identifying yourselves to the porters, checking your pigeonholes at Wolfson Court frequently, and looking around for posters for MCR events.

Have a safe trip to Cambridge and do not hesitate to contact me, or our
Vice President, Karenjit Clare (kc331@cam.ac.uk), should there be anything we can do to help with your transition to Cambridge.

I look forward to meeting you all in October.

With my best wishes,

Ioannis (Yiannis) Baltopoulos
Girton MCR President

New MCR President

Dear All,

I just wanted to say that from today your new MCR President is Ioannis Baltopoulos. He will be assisted by Karenjit Clare, the new Vice-President. Tom and I are now officially stepping down from the positions and we wish the new MCR team all the best for this coming year. I am sure they will do a great job.

I would like to thank all those that have worked with us over the past year, and those that have supported us on many occasions. It has been a pleasure representing you as much as I could and seeing many of you on various occasions. Moreover, I would like to thank the MCR Committee for their hard work and devotion to our common cause, but also for being so friendly and approachable. All this wouldn’t have been possible without them. There are many outstanding issues that we are currently working on with College, and the transition from one MCR team to the other will not happen without these pending issues, which we need to resolve as early as possible to make Graduate life at Girton a bit better.

Right, time has come for me to step down from the stage J

Enjoy your summer everyone!

MCR Presidential Election Results

Dear All,
The voting for your new MCR President and Vice-President is now over.

I am very pleased to announce that the new President of the MCR is Ioannis Baltopoulos and the new Vice-President is Karenjit Clare. Both have been elected by a vast majority (> 80%).

This year the participation level has been 18%, much better than previous years. I would like to thank all those that have voted and hopefully next year we can reach 20%!

I am attaching a document which summarises the results (here).

Both will take up their roles when Tom and I step down at the end of this month. This will allow them to settle in before the new academic year. I am sure the new MCR team will do a great job and I am taking this opportunity to wish them all the best.

Best wishes,

Alexios

Beer and Wine in the Cafeteria?

The MCR began talks with the college this past week about a potential compromise for not having a regular bar. We have raised the idea of having beer and wine available for purchase during dinner time in the cafeteria, with the possibility of holding the cafeteria open later once a week so that people could relax with a drink a little past the normal 7:30 closing time. If you have any other suggestions or comments on this please let your MCR representatives know. We will keep you posted on this initiative.

Big Formal Hall Exchange Week – don’t be left out!

Dear Girton graduates,

the seats for the formal hall exchange with Magdalene are all taken by now, but there is good news: Between February 12 and February 17, we are going to have a diverse range of exchanges with other MCRs – please read the descriptions below. We encourage you to sign up for as many exchanges as you like. In case you want to sign up for more than one, however, please rank them in order of preference – we’ll try to accommodate as many different people as possible.

The sign-up period for all these exchanges ends on February 2. We’ll then send out a list of participants, and you’ll have time to provide payment until February 9.

The Caius Exchange (Monday 12th February): Small & Snug

The first exchange will be with Gonville & Caius MCR on Monday 12th February. The special thing about this one is that we will be seated with Caius graduates in the gallery of their dining hall. 18 people from Caius can attend, plus 18 from Girton – so the atmosphere of this one will be really cozy. We agreed with Caius that the groups for this exchange should be as “stable” as possible so people can actually get to know each other. In other words, if you decide to come to Caius formal hall, it would be great if you could also come to Girton’s formal hall on the 22nd – that’s when the Caius group will visit us in return.
(Price for formal hall at Caius: 10.80 pounds, corkage charge: 1 pound; begins at 6:45pm.)

The Queens’ Exchange (Thursday 15th February): Dinner & Good Music
As you may already know, Queens’ College will host a joint Open Mic Night on Thursday 15th February. As a special treat, Queens’ MCR is inviting us and St John’s MCR to dine with them before the performances start. Don’t miss this excellent opportunity to meet graduates from other colleges and enjoy good music afterwards. In addition, you’ll be able to check out “Los Elementos”, the new band of Girton MCR Vice President Tom Baden. ;-)
(Price for formal hall at Queens’: 7.05 pounds, begins at 7pm)

The Robinson Exchange (Saturday 17th February): St Valentine’s Dinner & Party
Robinson
College – just a few yards down Grange Road from Wolfson Court – will be hosting a big St Valentine’s Dinner for about 200 people on Saturday 17th February. Seats at this dinner will be assigned randomly so that people from different colleges can meet and mingle. Plus, there will be a party right after formal hall – has there ever been a better way to celebrate St Valentine’s?
(Details are not yet available, but the price is estimated between 10 and 15 pounds. We encourage you to sign up already now.)

Looking forward to seeing you guys at all those exchanges,

Clemens
Girton MCR, External Ents Officer
