Using Linux-SRT

Interfaces

There are various ways of using the system, in probable increasing order of convenience:

  1. With the setp command-line interface
  2. With the qps monitor program
  3. Direct manipulation via window manager integration
  4. Using the AutoQOS feature (simple QOS management)

Reserves

Reserve specifications are described in the /etc/qosrc manpage.

The key parameters for QOS scheduling are Period and Slice. Processes belonging to a reserve are guaranteed to receive Slice microseconds of time every Period microseconds. A smooth 50 FPS animation might require a Slice of 7ms and a Period of 20ms, for example.

Linux-SRT's admission control algorithm will refuse to create new QOS contracts if to do so would over-commit the processor.

QOS scheduling takes precedence over the POSIX static RT priorities in order to ensure that guarantees are met.
