Bristol 2 - Cambridge Blues 16
The Cambridge Blues travelled to Bristol with high expectations, having so far faced all 5 members of the Southern Premier league, and remained undefeated. The Blues were exceptionally determined to come away with a good win, as Bristol has been our bogey team in the last 3 seasons. We arrived in plenty of time despite some dodgy instructions and the weather was unexpectedly good, so we felt well prepared going into the start of the game. We got off to a good start with 2 quick goals from Georgie Hurt, who despite a certain reputation for her shooting ability is turning into a regular and dependable goal scorer for the blues, topping the scoring for this match with 6. Bristol struggled with our new defensive system as Bath had done the week before, despite instructions from their coach in an attempt to break it down, bring us many turnovers in our attacking half. The goals flooded in with 3 from Adele Fauvet including a beautiful full pitch fast break caused by a flying interception by Joise Baum, 2 from Kate Moorland, 1 from Emily Knight and 1 from Lea Michaels off a well worked set play. The blues reach half time 10-0 up with solid defensive displays from Gen Gotla and Helen Leopard, most notably a stunning interception by Leopard when countering a Bristol fast break after excellent work by Gotla, repelling the few threats the Bristol attack posed in the first half. Half time bought a chance to discuss and rectify the few communication errors there had been in the first half and to bring some more structure to the attacking play in trialling our set plays in a match situation. The Cambridge domination continued into the second half with 2 more goals from Moorland and 2 from Hurt, a first Blues goal for Josie Baum and a couple from Rosie Garvey took the Blues tally for the match to 16. Bristol then managed to scrape a messy goal and threatened the Blues goal more in the last quarter, scoring a second consolation goal, minutes from the end of the match. In all another convincing display for the Blues to extend their unbeaten run to 6 games, showing form that must surely have all the premier teams worried.
