Final Score: Oxford Blues 1 - Cambridge Blues 10
Despite an injury-plagued team, the Blues lacrosse girls once again put on an outstanding performance to annihilate Oxford in the first of our meetings this season. After losing the Varsity match last year by the narrowest of margins, the Blues were keen to reassert Cambridge’s authority by demonstrating to our oldest rivals that there would be no chance of a repeat performance this year. Early goals from Ellie Walshe and Kate Morland, combined with the exceptional shot-stopping abilities of goalkeeper and captain Alex Carnegie-Brown gave Cambridge the psychological advantage from the first whistle. A solid defence linked fluidly with a seemingly indefatigable midfield to provide the attacking players with opportunities that were rarely missed, already showing remarkable improvement since the start of the season. As the match progressed the Blues increasingly dominated the midfield, with fresher Georgie Hurt and Blues veteran Ros Lloyd providing endless opportunities for the attacks to capitalise on. Even with possession of the ball, Oxford looked unlikely to score at any point due to the strength of a Cambridge defensive unit that is looking more and more comfortable playing together. After 60 minutes of focus and determination, the final whistle blew to leave Oxford quaking in their boots at the prospect of next term having to face a Cambridge team that seems to go from strength to strength. With a performance of this standard so early in the season, it seems likely that the Blues will continue their unbeaten run to present a significant challenge for the BUSA title this year.
