Final Score: Cambridge Blues 13 - Bristol 6
The women’s Blues team turned out for their first match of the season unsure of what to expect from a Bristol side which has been notable for their wildly varying form over the past few years. They did not endear themselves to the squad by turning up rather late, and this rather typified Bristol’s approach to the match, where the superior skills of the Cambridge team were immediately apparent, especially from long-term Light Blue Ros Lloyd, captain Alex Carnegie-Brown and newcomer Georgie Hurt. Cambridge raced into the lead early on and all appeared to be going smoothly until Bristol finally arrived in Cambridge properly and put together a few neat midfield transitions. However, the Blues recovered from their slight slump and from half-time took complete control of the game, building a good lead and effectively shutting down Bristol’s attack. The number of shots on target far exceeded the number of goals Cambridge scored and this was definitely a match during which the squad began to learn about playing with each other. Bright appearances from freshers Gen Gotla and Ellie Walshe showed that new talents were settling in quickly, while the return of Adele Fauvet provided a focus for the attack which bodes well for exciting play later this season. All in all, a solid start to the season in a match which showed the potential of this new squad.
