About CAUV

CAUV stands for Cambridge Autonomous Underwater Vehicle. It is a student developed autonomous submarine with multiple capabilities. The initial design criteria was for a small ROV to inspect the underside of pancake ice flows in the arctic. Developing an AUV that could perform this task remains our long term goal. However, our immediate challenge is the SAUC-E competition.

The design of CAUV is light compact and sleek, at about 7kg it could easily be carried around in a flight case for fast deployment. However by taking advantage of the recent size reduction in electronics and batteries, CAUV also packs a punch, with an endurance of a few hours, and a 1Ghz computer the size of a playing card, CAUV will have the brains to tackle a variety of missions.

We are the lightest AUV to attempt the SAUC-E challenge, at 6.3kg, and won Overall Second Prize in 2007. In 2008, again the lightest AUV, we were awarded the Special Prize for Innovation in Systems Engineering from DCNS.
