Poetry

That a mere five poems by Leeds students are presented here belies the enormous breadth and depth of talent at the University. Publications such as this, as well as the Alison Morland poetry prize, and the journals Stand, Poetry & Audience, and Blueprint further the cause, whilst emphasising the important role of creativity and the arts on campus.

In addition to the excellent poems by Tom Brand, Sophie Payling, and Josephine Ivie, two translations are presented, one from a contemporary Persian poem and one from a mid-twentieth-century German work. Moreover, poetry plays a prominent part in the 'essays' sections of this issue, the following pieces all engaging with the subject in very different ways:

» Duality in the poems of Catullus
» Poem and Poet: A Post Mortem
» Tichborne's Elegy

All of the poems in this first issue are successful and provocative in their different ways; no further justification can be offered than to recommend that you read and re-read them. As always, submissions are welcome, and should be addressed to leedsreview@hotmail.com.
