Yoga Styles
Hatha Yoga
The term Hatha Yoga can encompass a variety of types of yoga. However, the classes are usually slow-paced and includes basic postures and breathing techniques.
Ashtanga Yoga or Power Yoga
Ashtanga yoga consists of a sequence of poses, which always is performed in the same order. In total, there are six series of increasing difficulty. The asanas are accompanied by Ujjayi breathing and vinyasas (a flow of movements to get from one posture to another). It is physically demanding and will help you to increase strength, flexibility and stamina.
Vinyasa Flow Yoga
Vinyasa flow yoga is based on Ashtanga yoga but does not strictly follow the Ashtanga yoga series. Instead the sequence of postures and the tempo depend on the teacher and may also vary from one class to another.
Iyengar Yoga
Iyengar yoga is known for paying great attention to detail and precise alignment of postures. In order this achieve this as well as to avoid getting injured, Iyengar yoga emphasises the use of props, such as belts and blocks, and encourages holding poses over long periods.
Bikram/Hot Yoga
Bikram yoga, also called hot yoga, is practied in a room with a high temperature. Backbends, forward bends, and twists are accompanied by Kapalabhati Breath or the "breath of fire". Practice of this style of yoga promotes the cleansing of the body, release of toxins and utmost flexibility. As you will sweat a lot it is important to bring a bottle of water to these classes (note, however, that when practising Ashtanga yoga you are not supposed to drink during the class).
Pilates
Pilates builds strength, endurance, flexibility, coordination, and control of the body. Pilates emphasizes strengthening your core, or ‘powerhouse’ and involves a series of controlled movements that engage both your body and mind. Pilates was invented by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s.
Reformer Pilates
These classes apply the same techniques as our other Pilates classes, but work is done on a Pilates Reformer instead of on a mat. The Reformer is a simple yet intelligent piece of equipment that is adjustable to work with you. The machine creates resistance, deepening the workout.
