Talks - Michaelmas 2007
We hold talks most Wednesday evenings at the vet school. Everyone is invited and the talks offer a great opportunity to come to the vet school and enjoy pizza and beer, while a guest speaker talks about their chosen subject. The talks cover large, small and exotic animals, and they give you the chance to hear about subjects not necessarily covered in the lectures. All talks, unless otherwise stated, are in Lecture Theatre 2 (the comfy one) at the Vet School at 7.30pm, with refreshments from 7pm. Talks are free to members and £1 to those who aren't. Talks are organised by the Committee's Vice President.

South Africa Game Capture We have arranged a lunch time talk for those of you that are interested in coming on one of the two game capture courses that the vet school endorses. These courses are both run in South Africa, and the talks are predominantly for those students that are thinking of coming on one of them this coming summer. There is a lot to get through in the hour so the schedule is as follows: 1-1.30 Paul Gardener is flying over from South Africa to talk to you about the Shamwari game capture course (the new one). 1.30-1.40 Nicky Holdstock will talk to you about the other course that you have heard about which we have been sending students on for years. 1.40-1.50 Vanessa Waite and Fi Jacobs will talk to you about each course briefly from the perspective of someone who has been there and done it. This will leave a few minutes for questions, but we can easily arrange to chat again just to Vanessa and Fi if you have more to ask. This course is mainly designed
for 4th and 5th years, but there has been quite a bit of interest in
the 3rd year. Whilst we would fully encourage 3rd years to come to
the talk if you are interested, we don't really advertise actually going
on the course until 4th year because you need to know some clinical skills
for TPRs/blood sampling and IV injections etc and you won't be able to get
fully involved without this. |

Pet food debate In January, the AVS was approached by a lobby group that claimed clinical veterinary nutrition teaching across all the vet schools was biased in favour manufactured pet foods. The basis of this accusation was the funding that the industry provides to the vet schools and the opportunity that their vets/nutritionists have to lecture us.
While it was the opinion of the AVS that nutrition teaching was The debate proceedings can be found here. |
