Talks - Lent 2008

| Back to Talks

We hold talks most Wednesday evenings at the vet school.  Everyone is invited and the talks offer a great opportunity to come to the vet school and enjoy pizza and beer, while a guest speaker talks about their chosen subject.  The talks cover large, small and exotic animals, and they give you the chance to hear about subjects not necessarily covered in the lectures.

All talks, unless otherwise stated, are in Lecture Theatre 2 (the comfy one) at the Vet School at 7.30pm, with refreshments from 7pm.

Talks are free to members and £1 to those who aren't.

Talks are organised by the Committee's Vice President.

New graduate work in Australia and New Zealand

Amy Nicholls from Vetlink will be flying over from Australia to talk to us about working over there and in New Zealand.  She is going to mention everything from locum work to visa applications.  If you're thinking that you might like to go and work in this area of the world at some point in the future, it is well worth coming along for a listen (and some pizza).  For more information see the posters up and around the vet school.

Kindly sponsored by Vetlink.

March 3rd 2008

Nb. Mon lunchtime 12.45

Charity work abroad

Sophia McMillan will be talking about her work with two charities she has been involved with since graduating.  Both are abroad: SPANA in Morocco (mostly equine), and ACE (Animal Care in Egypt) (all species).  Working with these charities has exposed exposed Sophia to a high number of varied caseloads, as well as exposure to dealing with conditions we rarely would encounter in the UK. The talk will highlight the value of providing veterinary care in developing countries.  This may be of particular interest to horsey people because SPANA run a volunteer program which you can get involved in.

Ethical control of wild animal populations - should we still be using snares?

Bill Swann will be speaking on the above subject.  Until recently he was chairman of the Animal Welfare Science Ethics and Law
Veterinary Association, Vice President of WSPA and a Council Member of the Companion Animal Welfare Council.  This is going to be a very interesting talk designed to get you thinking about the control of animal populations, and should be a good way to sit down over the lunch hour.  4th years especially come along to support your year-mate's dad!

Basic veterinary business skills

Adrian Pratt will talk about surviving your first few years in practice from a business perspective.  The aim of this is to get young graduates thinking about where basic veterinary costs come from, such as consult fees etc.  This is something not approached in the course and should be very useful.  This is particularly aimed at the 5th and 6th years but everyone else is of course welcome.

Kindly sponsored by Hills.

BEVA Student Clinical Club Tour

Disaster Medicine and the BEVA Emergency Services Protocol

David Dugdale, BEVA President, and Jim Green, from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Jim has been working very closely with BEVA to help create the newly set up Emergency Services Protocol.  This hopes to more effectively co-ordinate rescue efforts between those parties involved in equine RTAs, including vets, the fire service, police, RSPCA, ILPH inspectors and any other relevant bodies.  Jim will hopefully let us know a little bit more about it and where vets fit into the picture.  We have been promised lots of gory pictures and entertaining stories so hopefully it should be interesting and relevant for each of the years.

There will also be an introduction from David Dugdale, the BEVA president, to introduce everyone to the work of BEVA.

Nadias will be available from 7pm.

Organised by Cambridge BEVA Rep Cat Holmes.

Kindly sponsored by BEVA.
