Dueling Traditions
Traditional Dueling Practice in Grantabruge
Skill in Duelling is based on showing superiority rather than causing harm. Duels follow the rules of fencing: the game is won when first blood is drawn. Any player may take part in a duel, but only those with Duelling skill will be able to control their blows. Players without the duelling skill can either call "Nothing" (the blow was too soft to count) or "Half", "Single", etc, in which you injure your opponent properly. Anyone (who can cause damage) can choose to cause real harm to their opponent during a duel but should be warned that this is very dishonourable.
When fighting in a duel, players must call "Touch" instead of their usual damage call (assuming they have the Duelling skill). Play goes to one touch. The level of Duelling ability which you have is one greater than the number of "Touch" calls which you may ignore before one counts against you and wins the duel. After each Touch call, if a wound has not been inflicted, the players must cease combat and return to their start positions before resuming an attack.
Calling damage more than 'TOUCH' technically wins the duel immediately, but such base treachery on the part of the duelist woud be beneath anyone trained in this noble art. In general, such a shocking breach of etiquette would lead to the cad being forcibly ejected from the premises by anyone present possessed of a shred of honour.
All players in a duel must have a second to ensure fair play. The seconds should call for medical attention if necessary and should not be impeded in this task. A fine may have to be paid to the injured party if a duellist strikes too hard (or to their family if they die from the blow). The amount should be decided by the players IC.
Only two people may duel at once. Only one weapon each is allowed; the challenged party may choose. No Magic or Spirit may be used in a duel. Interfering with a duel in progress is rude and may result in you being challenged to a duel and the original duel being restarted.
As always, while these rules are the ones commonly accepted, anyone may choose to duel by different rules by agreement.
