About the TMS

The Trinity Mathematical Society, or TMS, was founded by a group of undergraduates in Trinity College, Cambridge in 1919 to 'promote the discussion of subjects of mathematical interest.' Today the Society has over 300 members and each year holds an extensive range of talks and social events for mathematicians and interested non-mathematicians from Trinity and other colleges. Our talks range from discussions of interesting mathematics not covered by the Tripos to light-hearted expositions of new, but accessible, research. We believe the TMS is the oldest extant subject society at any university in the country.

Getting Involved

Being on the Committee is a really good way to get more involved with the Society—and it's great fun, too!

The Committee is elected annually at the AGM (as described in the Rules) and all ordinary members (in statu pupillari) are allowed to stand for posts. If you are interested in standing, the best thing to do would be to come along to our meetings and make yourself known to the current Committee.

The Squared Square

The image to the left is the unique smallest simple perfect square dissection (or squared square!). It is also the logo of the TMS. You can find out more about it on this separate page.

The Apple

For obvious historical reasons the apple is very important symbolically to the TMS. An apple is dropped at the end of meetings to signify that the meeting is now social; the President bowls an apple as the first 'ball' at the annual cricket match; and, as outlined in the Standing Orders, an apple is part of the design of the Society tie (sadly not currently available).

Affiliation

The TMS is affiliated to the Archimedeans, the Cambridge University maths society. As part of this affiliation, we admit members of other colleges' maths societies (currently only the Adams Society) to our talks for free—and in return, members of the TMS are admitted to Adams Society talks for free.

The Trinity Mathematical Society is an official society in Trinity College, a constituent college of the University of Cambridge.
