Phil Ewels
My rowing career started at Pengwern Boat Club in Shrewsbury, where I coxed my dad's crew when i was about 7. I got too big to fit in the cox seat aged about 12 and stroked a quad. The quad turned into a IV when we turned 14 and we stayed together for another couple of years, the highlights being winning the Junior Inter-Regional Regatta and getting bronze at the National Schools Regatta (after being set off at 45 degrees), both at Holme Pierpont.
Everyone else gave up rowing so I trialled for GB juniors in a scull for one and a half years then joined the senior squad. Ended up in great pair before leaving to go to uni.
Had a couple of years off whilst at Bristol, then rowed for City of Cambridge Rowing Club during my placement year in Cambridge.
I returned to Cambridge to do a PhD in molecular biology and have been sitting in the stern pair of Trinity Hall's first boats ever since! I was the Trinity Hall Boat Club captain for 2009/2010.
