Welcome to Sidney Sussex Middle Common Room!

Christof Gaunt's Presidential Address

We are the friendly and outgoing graduate community of Sidney Sussex College, and consist of all the PhD, MPhil, PartIII, LLM, and other graduate students of the college. I'm President of the MCR Committee -- a group of student volunteers who organise social events, provide welfare, represent Sidney graduates, and run the MCR.

Sidney is in the heart of Cambridge, directly opposite Sainsbury's, and you can't help becoming immersed in the bustling student atmosphere of the city. However, within the college walls you'll find a remarkably peaceful space, where you can explore the stunning gardens, get down to some serious study, eat in the beautiful dining hall or simply hang out with friends. The College itself has a well stocked library and computer suite, squash court, top-notch gym, a great student-run bar, several music practice rooms and access to some of the best outdoor sports facilities in Cambridge. In 2011 the college opened the new MCR complex - a dedicated space where Sidney grads can study, relax, play Wii or PS3, watch TV, read magazines, and just socialise.

Most graduates' academic life is centred on their department, but Cambridge's college system provides a parallel community that you are part of during your time here. (The MCR Committee) aims to make life at Sidney as fun and engaging as possible, by hosting events throughout the year. At the start of Michaelmas term (in October), we will organise a fun-packed Freshers' Week designed to help everyone (new and continuing) get to know each other, and settle in to Sidney life. The main fixture of a graduate student's calendar at Sidney is the fortnightly Formal Halls; a 'formal' dinner in the College hall, which are often themed, and are always hugely popular. We actively encourage interaction with other colleges: in the last year, we arranged swaps to eighteen other colleges' Formal Halls. There are plenty of other events to keep you busy, such film nights, fortnightly Sunday brunches, stimulating graduate seminars, informal suppers with Fellows, whisky and beer tasting events, and of course the famous MCR Garden Party in June.

If you haven't already settled on Sidney, then you surely should be convinced to apply now! So go ahead, put Sidney as your first preference; and 'Like' the Facebook page for updates on what is happening in the MCR.
