Every show REDS produce involves at least as many people working off the stage as on it. This is a brief guide to most of the roles.
TECHNICAL DIRECTOR Has overall responsibility for coordinating the technical aspects of the show, with particular emphasis on the set. With input from the set designer and director, must construct a set appropriate to the play and venue. STAGE MANAGER An important role in larger productions, follows the script and cues the lighting, sound and stage operators, as well as ensuring the cast are ready for their entrances. LIGHTING DESIGNER Develops a lighting plan to accompany the play, providing both illumination and atmosphere. This involves choosing appropriate lanterns and colour gels, as well as writing a cue sheet.
LIGHTING OPERATOR Assists the lighting designer, particularly with the plot and focus, where the lights are positioned for the play. Also operates the lighting for each performance, using a manual lighting board in smaller venues or a computerised board in larger ones. SOUND DESIGNER/OPERATOR Working with the director, finds or records sound effects to accompany the play. Larger productions may also involve mixing live audio for accompanying musicians and singers. COSTUME DESIGNER Depending on the budget and design of the show, may involve making new clothes but more often hiring suitable costumes for the cast. SET DESIGNER Develops the artistic ideas for the set, producing drawings to show the director and technical director. PROPS MANAGER This can involve finding all shapes and sizes of obscure props, often on a limited budget, and even making ones yourself. PUBLICITY All shows require publicity and this job often involves poster and flyer design, but certainly not limited to these techniques alone.
