Producing is often the least understood of all the production team roles. Basically it is a very organisational role, but knowledge of how the theatre works is an advantage. It can involve anything and everything from booking rehearsal venues, getting a production team assembled, chairing production meetings and ensuring that the budget is kept to.
It’s kind of like thinking of the director having total control over the artistic side of the show, whilst the producer makes sure that it happens on time and on budget. Producers will keep everyone in the show informed about what is going on, making sure that deadlines are met through the run up to the show.
The most important things that you need to produce are commitment and enthusiasm. You may find yourself emailing in the middle of the night, or turning up to rehearsal to collect bits of information that you need. If you’ve not done much theatre before, it’s probably worth reading up about the various roles - both artistic and technical.
Obviously it’s always a bonus if you get on with your director as you will be spending a lot of time together in the run up to the show. Actually, it’s probably essential. You both need to have mutual respect for each other and keep each other updated as to what is going on.
