About QCOEF

QCOEF is an open committee of fellows and students from Queens' and Clare Colleges which raises and allocates funds for education-related projects in less developed countries. In the last year, we gave money to all kinds of projects across the world.

QCOEF began in 1984 as the Queens' and Clare Joint Overseas Bursary Scheme to fund a the education of one Southern African student at the University each year. Since then our focus has changed and the new title was adopted in 1991 to show our interest in educational projects from all parts of the developing world.

Applications for funding generally come from student contacts and projects are ideally small, community run and not supported by larger bodies. However, we sometimes fund projects with other organisations such as Link Africa, Cambridge University Southern African Fund for Education (CUSAFE), or Cambridge Fund for Female Education (CAMFED). These links often come from projects which Queens' and Clare students have been involved with during years out or through old members. Guidelines for applying for funding can be found here.

To allow us to continue this work we need your help. Firstly to establish links to good projects, and secondly to raise the money which we can then donate. In 2004, money was raised from college bops and other events, but our main source of funding comes from students adding £5 or £10 to their termly college bills. At Clare just add it on when you pay, at Queens' sign up in advance.

Interested? Got an idea for a project that needs funding? Want to learn more about Third World needs and how we can help? Come to one of the committee meetings held fortnightly during term time. Check out the notice board at the top of the stairs to Buttery in Clare or outside the Bar in Queens'. For more information or to join the email list contact us.
