The checksum is a mechanism whereby the programme which generates these
files may ascertain whether someone or something else has modified them
since it last wrote to them (and thus be confident that it can still
manipulate them).

I think the logically prior question we want to be looking at is "what
basic types of behaviour do we want the user to be able to select?" (e.g.,
"send my mail to hermes", "leave my mail on the server", etc)
