Dear Friends,
Its that time of year again when Canada celebrates its birthday this weekend. Says my counterpart Yaz at the LSE:
"For the past couple of years, Canada Day in London was an informal event that dramatically grew in popularity. Usually, it consisted of the area next to the Maple Leaf Pub turning into a massive street party (last year - 3,000 people). This year, however, the London police will not allow a street party. Instead, they have given Canadians all of Trafalgar Square to use for a formal event."
The Cambridge Canadian Club will have a team (called The Maple Leafs of course) captained by yours truly at the street hockey tournament being organised as part of the festivities. But there are all sort of other events going on that day, including a free concert featuring amongst other performers Ron Sexsmith from Ontario and Heavy Blinkers from Nova Scotia. You can see what other events are on at www.canadadaylondon.com
If you can't make it to London, Davin has also kindly offered his place for a Canada day Pool Party on July 1. The £5 no cossie fine was a joke, so drop by if you can even if you don't want to take a dip in the pool. Canadian Club members and friends are all welcome!
Details are:
The party starts at 4pm till late, and I'll lay on a spread.
Cedar House, 136a Huntingdon Road -- at the junction of Marion Close &
Huntingdon Road, under the big cedar tree. The entrance is via the
drive, which is first one on Marion Close. If you're driving there's
plenty of parking along Marion Close (though it's a bit narrow) and on
Storey's Way.
RSVP dyap1 at yahoo.co.uk <mailto:dyap1 at yahoo.co.uk> if you're planning on
coming so I have an idea on numbers, and can plan accordingly. Also, get
in touch if you can lend a hand.
Hope to see you at either or both!
Hank
Press Release
London's Trafalgar Square will be the site of this year's Canada Day celebrations on Friday, June 30, 2006. The event, an initiative of the Canadian community in the UK and the Canadian High Commission, will bring together an all-day programme of Canadian entertainment and activities to suit every taste.
'This is the first year that we are celebrating Canada Day in Trafalgar Square,' said Canadian High Commissioner Mel Cappe. 'We are delighted that the Mayor of London has given us this tremendous opportunity to showcase Canada here in the heart of this world city.'
The celebrations will kick off at 2:00pm, when Trafalgar Square will come alive with Canadian sights and sounds - including street hockey - the summer version of Canada's national game. Canadian tourism opportunities, food, arts and crafts, and talented street performers will be showcased around the square.
'Canada on Stage' will begin at 5:30pm, with a diverse range of mainstage acts from across the country, entertaining Canadians, Londoners, and visitors alike until 9:00pm that evening.
The final artists' line-up will be announced in the coming weeks.
The Canada Day in London celebrations will be filmed and broadcast at the national Canada Day party on Ottawa's Parliament Hill, and at other events across Canada.
Canada Day in Trafalgar Square is a free event.
