Amadeus

March 1st, 2011

AMADEUS by Peter Shaffer
March 10th-March 13th, Old Labs Theatre, Newnham

‘I was a good man, as the world calls good. What use was it to me? Goodness could not make me a good composer. Was Mozart good? Goodness is nothing in the furnace of art.’

Clare Actors presents an exciting new production of this modern classic. In parts murder mystery, biting satire and theatrical spectacle – Shaffer’s tragic masterpiece asks us finally, not what it takes to be a genius, but what it means to be a man.

Tickets £4 – available through the ADC. Call 01223 300085 or visit www.adcticketing.com. Alternatively, email Hannah (hn259@cam.ac.uk).

Impact

January 26th, 2011

The Impact team invites you to the inaugural Impact conference: the national conference on student volunteering and social action.

Are you passionate about creating social change? Are you keen to learn more about the issues surrounding volunteering in today’s society? As a student, do you have any experience as a volunteer? We’re talking about anything ranging from campaigning for the environment to coaching sport.

Bringing together over 200 university students, Impact will provide attendees with an opportunity to meet other like-minded students, share ideas and gain inspiration and practical assistance for their projects. It will also celebrate the achievements of the tens of thousands of students who give their time to others.

Impact will take place on the 5th and 6th of March 2011 at the University of Cambridge, and it will help you gain the skills, connections and resources needed to build a more socially just and sustainable world, whether through campaigning, community volunteering, or social enterprise projects.

Please visit www.impactconference.org.uk to find out more and to purchase your ticket today.

We are also offering two opportunities for you to get more involved today, see below if you would like to (1) Join the conference organisers or (2) Participate in the ‘Nitty Gritty Committee’. Plus, watch out for oppportunities to present your project at Impact.
…………………

(1) Join the Impact team!
We are now looking for enthusiastic students to make Impact happen: while the bulk of the work is done we need a ***Marketing Officer*** and a ***Logistics Team*** to join the conference organisers. No experience is required, we are only asking for a small amount of your time and energy in the lead up to Impact.

Here is a brief summary of the roles:
Marketing Officer: involved in publicising Impact, both around Cambridge and to students and professionals across UK universities. Point of contact for sponsors and representatives when they attend the conference/run stalls.
Logistics: on-the-day logistics for all the session venues, such as equipment, signs and directions; ensure the smooth running of stalls and liaise with the venue catering service.

If you are interested or have any questions, please get in touch with Rebecca at conference@cambridgehub.org
…………..
(2) Get involved in the ‘Nitty Gritty Committee’!
Impact is a fresh take on an old idea that has lost momentum in recent years so now it’s time for you to have your say in the future of student volunteering. How can student volunteering and social action remain student led? How can we respond to the real needs of our communities? How can volunteering contribute to student’s education? We are devoting a third of the conference to a ‘Debate It’ track in order to give the voice back to students who will be the key players of tomorrow.

If you are committed to any of the issues linked to Impact, have an opinion, or simply want to learn more, then the Nitty Gritty Committee (NGC) is for you. The NGC won’t require a huge commitment but it will be vital if Impact is to produce anything concrete. It will spend time debating in the run up to conference, present its thoughts at the start of the conference and with feedback over the weekend, will aim to generate an inspired statement to government, universities and students: The world from Impact 2011.
If you are keen to join the group, please email Sara Fernandez, sara.fernandez@studenthubs.org with your Name, University, Year of Study, and finishing off the sentence “I will be a great member of the Nitty Gritty Committee because…”
…………..
That’s all from us for now…please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions,
The Impact Team.

P.S. Don’t forget to take advantage of the reduced price early-bird tickets!

Wed 16 February (Week 4)
West Road Concert Hall

Singers wanted for ‘An Evening with Gilbert and Sullivan’ – a grand
gala concert to launch the 50th Anniversary of the Cambridge
University G&S Society. The event will feature a mix of Gilbert &
Sullivan’s best-loved songs and scenes, works inspired by the duo, and
reminiscences from the society’s history. It’s a fantastic

mighty pair.

Sat 22 January, 1-5pm – Trinity Hall Music Room
Mon 24 January, 5-9pm, Caius Bateman Room

You will be asked to sing a song and read some dialogue, so please
come prepared to sing a song, preferably G&S or a similar musical
style. If there’s a particular solo/ensemble song you’re
dying to perform in the concert, we’d be more than happy to hear it,
or if not just pick anything. Your chances will not be affected
either way. Similarly, if there’s a particular scene or monologue you
want to do, please come share your ideas with us and perform it,
otherwise dialogue will be provided. If you have a self-written comic
sketch about Victorian light opera tucked up you sleeve, bring it
along! G&S and other well-known scores will be provided.

Group auditions very welcome for ensemble numbers – you can audition
both for a solo and as part of a group.

For some suggestions, please see the attached list, or feel free to
choose your own favorite! If you need the sheet music, email our
artistic director Rosie at mrc58@cam.ac.uk with your song choice
with your name and college and we will send you a score. A
