How to survive being a Peterhouse lawyer

working in the library

As an old and wise third year, I thought I'd help set out the Pros and Cons of studying law at Peterhouse to help you make a balanced and informed decision about what it is really like here!

Pros

Cons

  • The law faculty still looks very new and modern, definitely superior to other faculties around.
  • It looks like a cross between an airport terminal and a bread bin.
  • There is a 'Nadia's Patisserie' in the faculty (best sandwich and cake shop in the world - ever).
  • A trip to Nadia's in the faculty usually implies lectures or a trip to the library are also involved.
  • Lawyers have a reputation for being wined and dined and get targeted by all the big law firms trying to recruit new trainees.
  • Free food and wine might be accompanied by company presentation or necessitate polite and intelligent conversation.
  • Dr Munday likes to invite Peterhouse lawyers for drinks at the beginning of term. Usually involves champagne.
  • He also has a sign on his door saying 'Welcome to the snake pit' (but don't worry haven't seen any snakes there yet).
  • Most work in the first year can be done from little revision guides called 'Nutshells'.
  • By the second year real reading is getting pretty necessary and this year there isn't a single 'Nutshells' guide on my shelf!
  • Cases have headings at the top which you can read so that you don't have to read the entire thing.
  • Sometimes supervisors ask you what the judge actually said in a case and then you come a bit unstuck.
