Economics
The first year course involves five compulsory papers, although only 2 of
them cover macro and micro economics. The variety is good - it stops much
boredom occuring with any one paper. Choice increases through the second
and third years, with macro and micro staying compulsory all the way
through. There is a lot of reading and essay writing involved with
economics. The faculty library is well stocked and Peterhouse library also
contains a copy of all the core textbooks, although there is generally only
one copy so its a good idea to get on well with other economists in your
year! The politics section for first year has every book you would ever
want to read, and countless others you wouldn't! For the first two years at
least, Peterhouse economists tend to be supervised together partly by our
DoS and also outside of college as we don't have enough of our own fellows.
Our current DoS has a tendency to talk for a long time but is very good at
offering help with all aspects of the course. Supervisions outside of
college offer a chance to poke around other colleges and also to get to
know different economists - opportunities to befriend other economists
often seem to be lacking in the fourth 9 o'clock lecture of the week!
