Library & Computing

Library
The library at Peterhouse is impressive. Really impressive. It rivals most faculty libraries in terms of size. It’s housed in a former Victorian warehouse, subsequently a museum of Archaeology, and is a great place to work if you want an environment free from noise and other distractions. There’s a huge new gallery just opened which means there is always going to be space to sit, even in exam term when the library gets pretty busy. The new Gunn Gallery desks have internet connections, and the entire complex will shortly have wireless internet access, so you can bring your laptop with you if you work on computer. There are two computer rooms with word processing, internet and access to the university intranet, and all books are on a digital database which can be accessed externally via the Peterhouse website as well as in the library itself. We also get all the regular academic journals and if the library doesn’t have the book you’re looking for, it can usually be ordered and bought within the fortnight. It’s open from 9am to midnight every day in term, and up to five books can be taken out for two weeks at a time in term.

Computing
A lot of people bring computers with them to Uni – there are high speed Ethernet points in every room which can link you up both to the university intranet and the wider internet as well. At the same time, the college also has a computer room with both Macs and PCs for use by all and connected to a wide variety of peripheries such as scanners, laser and colour laser printers, which are great as such things often are expensive and take up lots of space in your room. Furthermore, the college computer officer will help you if you’ve problems with your machine and provide software such as anti-virus programs on request. Even if you’ve a computer yourself, the computer room is a really useful facility to have in college, if only to merely check email, and its constantly being kept up to date with the latest equipment.
