What is Drink Spiking?
Drink Spiking is when a substance is added to an individuals drink without their knowledge or consent.
Who is a Potential Target?
Both men and women are potential victims.
What types of drinks can be spiked?
Both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks can be spiked. Both glasses and bottles can be spiked.
A variety of substances can be used to spike a person's drink including alcohol. Remember drink spiking is the addition of a substance to someone's drink without his or her knowledge or consent.
Rohypnol:
- Known as: Roofies, Roche, Mexican Valium- Appearance: Purple diamond pill or round white tablet with Roche on it - Rohypnol is tasteless and odourless
- Takes 20-30 minutes to take effect, lasts 8 - 10 hours
- Symptoms: memory loss, disorientation, inability to communicate, dizziness or drowsiness.
Gamma Hydroxy Butyrate (GHB)
- Known as: Liquid X, Liquid Ecstasy, Easy Lay- Appearance: Clear Liquid, white powder
- GHB may have a salty taste
- Effects last 3-6 hours
- Symptoms: rapid intoxication, a reduction of inhibitions, violence or aggression, nausea or vomiting, may cause respiratory arrest.
Ketamine
- Known as: Special K, K- Appearance: Legally produced Ketamine is Clear Liquid, illegally produced Ketamine is a grainy white powder or tablet.
- Symptoms: loss of co-ordination of muscles, slurring of speech, dizziness, confusion, blurred vision and anxiety.
