News and Notices 2006-7
Hi all, and welcome to the LMBC website. Many of you who are new to Cambridge and to rowing won't have seen quite how big Cambridge rowing is. Johnians are lucky - LMBC are consistently one of the biggest and best college rowing clubs, and whether you're looking to enjoy a massive social scene, take your sport seriously or just offset a heavy student lifestyle with something fun and active, it can all be found here.
Sounds interesting? Email your Lower Boats' Captains Rich and Rhi for more info and most importantly to try some rowing for yourself. You won't be asked to join the club before you've had the chance to see whether you like rowing, so it's definitely worth a try!
Browse through the website to find out more about the history of the club, the different races we do, and photos of LMBC Boaties in action. If you're not sure where to start, here are some links to recent novice action, the sort of things you would be doing as a novice in LMBC.
Enjoy!

Last night M1 qualified for the Temple Challenge Cup at Henley. Our first race is Wednesday against our sister college, Trinity College Dublin. It would be nice to see as much red as possible along the course.
Congratulations to Kat McLoughlin on being elected Women's Captain for
2007-8, and to Hayley Fisher on being elected Men's and Overall Captain.
Elections for the Men's, Women's, and Overall Captains for 2007-8 will take place at 7.30pm on Sunday 27th May in the Dirac Room. Those wishing to stand should send me their names, together with those of a proposer and seconder, preferably by 5pm on Saturday 26th May.
Candidates should be ready to make a short speech after which there will be chance for questions and discussion. All members of the club are entitled to stand, attend the meeting and speak, but only members of the first three boats, members of the Junior Committee, and those who hold First May Colours are entitled to vote. Only members of the men's club may vote for the Men's Captain and vice-versa.
Full results, including individual times, are now available for the 2007 CUCBC-LMBC Erg Championship. Congratulations to First and Third on winning all available divisions.
Any feedback (positive or negative) from those who took part would be very useful, so that we can improve the event for next year - please email gfw21[at]cam.
Photos from the event will be posted within the next couple of days...
The CUCBC-LMBC Erg Championship will take place on the evening of Saturday 12th May at the Leys School sports centre, off Trumpington Road.
There will be divisions for men's and women's first boats and for men's and women's lower boats, with prizes for the winning crews in each division. Should there be a high demand, additional divisions may be added.
Entries are open until 23:59 on Monday 7th May at a cost of £24 per crew. Late entries will be accommodated, space-permitting, but at a higher cost of £32 per crew. Entries should be sent to Gerald Weldon, St John's College, Cambridge CB2 1TP, or alternatively may be emailed to gfw21[at]cam, with a cheque to the above address. Cheques should be made payable to LMBC, and labelled with your College.
Congratulations to Aaron Pascovitch of Jesus College on winning the 2007 Colquhoun Sculls, beating Chris Kerr of St. Catherine's college in the final by 6s. Full results are available, including winning times for all heats.
The second installment of the recently introduced LMBC newsletter is now available. It is sent to supporters of the Club for whom the College holds an email address. If you would like to receive future copies of the newsletter or know someone who would, please get in touch with Cath Twilley (contact details in the newsletter).
Congratulations to LMBC rower Hannah Stratford, who was rowing at bow in the Cambridge women's blue boat that beat Oxford by half a length at the Henley Boat Races earlier today.

M4 were unlucky to have early equipment failure resulting in a bump which got them their spoons. M3 realised by about first post that they were the only crew left rowing in their division and took a tactical energy saving rowover in sixes after hamish broke his seat. W2 were unlucky to be being chased by a very fast CCAT crew seeking blades and were bumped by them before they could get Kings to stay level. M2 had another tough rowover ahead of Caius 2 at the top of the 2nd division leaving them with the 2nd boat headship. They closed on Robinson but were unable to make the bump. W1 had another gruelling rowover chasing Downing. Dropping Newnham completely they got down to half a length on Downing but were unable to make the bump. M1 rowed over on station with Caius ahead.
Well done to all crews and bring on boat club dinner
M3 were unluckily bumped by a strong Fitz 2 with all other crews rowing over today. W2 had a unpressured rowover once the crews ahead and behind had all bumped out. Tomorrow they face the pressure of a CCAT crew hungry for blades and are chasing Kings, sent down to them by Jesus 2. M2 had a solid rowover at the top of M2, under pressure all the way from Caius 2. They then rowed over at the bottom of M1, leaving them as sandwich boat again for tomorrow. W1 had a better, more aggressive race, dropping Newnham more satisfactorily and gaining ground on Downing by the finish. The crews around all rowed over also leaving tomorrow as the last ditch attempt to get Downing. M1 were gaining on Jesus but Jesus bumped out on Caius, leaving them to row over - not quite able to get the overbump to headship. M1 are chasing Caius tomorrow.
Good luck to all crews for tomorrow. Let's get some last day bumps
Owing to illness, M4 had to scratch today, leading to a technical bump for the crew behind them. W2 rowed over behind a strong Jesus II. M2 were unfortunate enough to have to do two rowovers, although they could relax a bit once the crews behind had bumped out in the second division. Good race practice for tomorrow when they get a another shot at Robinson. W1 had a strong solid rowover between the crews ahead and behind them. M1 got the bump on Downing at Ditton after a good row, giving them another chance to attack Jesus tomorrow.
Today was the first day of racing for the top divisions with high winds making conditions tricky. M1 rowed over as the crews around them bumped out. W1 got the bump on Newnham by Ditton. M2 were unluckily bumped by Magdalene, leaving them as sandwich boat for tomorrow. M3 rowed over, again as the crews around them were all bumped out and M4 were unluckily bumped by Kings.
Tomorrow is third division's day of rest, so there is racing for all crews bar M3. Come down and support the red domination - as both M1 and W1 go for the bump on Downing.
Lent bumps got underway today with racing from W2, M3 and M4. W2 got their bump on Sidney and M3 and M4 were unlucky enough to be bumped by the chasing crews. First divisions have their first day tomorrow and it would be good to see more support for all crews on the bank.
Good luck to all crews racing tomorrow
M1 won S3 jointly with Clare and St. Anne's, Oxford, and finished at a respectable 5th position in S2 beating the CULRC...
The first race of this term saw the 1st men demolishing the opposition and finishing as the fastest overall crew with comfortable 25 s between us and the second fastest (FaT) crew.
Junior Fairbairns is tomorrow with crews racing from 9.15. Feel free to come along and support! Good luck to all crews racing.
Congratulations to the 3rd novice men on winning the plate competition at Clare Novice Regatta today. Race reports, photos and videos to follow...

Friday 2pm onwards: Men's plate - featuring the 3rd novice men
Saturday all day: Men's and Women's cup - featuring the 1st and 2nd novice men and 1st novice women - plus the later rounds of the plate competitions.

At the EGM held on 18th October, Clare Harvey was unanimously elected to take over as Women's Captain for this year.
As many of you will know, Gemma has unfortunately been forced to resign as Women's Captain, and Clare is currently acting Captain.
As one of the most important positions in the club, the Junior Committee feels that it is important to regularise the situation as soon as possible by holding a new election for the post.
They have therefore called an Extraordinary General Meeting of the club, to be held at 7pm this Wednesday (18th) in the Castlereagh room (Fisher building).
Candidates should send me their names together with those of a proposer and seconder, preferably by 7pm Tuesday. They should be prepared to give a short speech and answer questions at the meeting. All members of the club are entitled to stand, attend the meeting and ask questions, but only members of the women's club who are rowing in the first three boats, are on the Junior Committee or who hold a first May colour are entitled to vote.

Secretary
I am sorry to have to let you know that John Gleave, who coached 28 winning LMBC crews over the period 1973-1992, has died. A memorial service will take place in Great St Mary's Church in Cambridge on 21 October at 3.00pm. His widow has asked me to say that friends from the LMBC are very welcome to attend and that blazers are encouraged. Please spread the word.
Catherine Twilley
LMBC Senior Treasurer
