Tsurugi Bashi Kendo Kai
First Tsurugi Bashi Kendo Gasshuku
Instructors
KOROGI Tsugifusa sensei, Hanshi 8-dan
Korogi sensei, 79, started kendo at the age of 10. He received 7-dan in 1962 and 8-dan in 1981. He was made Hanshi in 1990. From 1990 to 2000 he was the Chief Director of the Kumamoto Prefecture Kendo Association. He is Shihan (chief instructor) of the University of Electrocommunications Kendo Club.
In his professional career he worked for almost 40 years at the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunication, then for a further 9 years at NTT Kyushuu Communication Service and at Kumamoto Asahi Broadcasting. He is a graduate of National Musen-Kousyuuzyo (the predecessor of the University of Electrocommunications) and of Waseda University.
NAGANUMA Hiroo sensei, 6-dan
Naganuma sensei, 56, started kendo at the age of 12. He received the grade of 6-dan in 1998. A graduate of the University of Electrocommunications, he has been working for Toshiba for over 30 years.
He first visited the Cambridge kendo dojo in 2003, helping to prepare two of our members for their dan grading. His kindness and generosity were only matched by our eagerness to learn kendo from him. Once back to Japan he spoke so highly about his visit here that he persuaded his own sensei to come back to Cambridge with him the following year!
Programme
As far as kendo practice goes, the intensive option, open to kendoka with or without bogu, consists of a 2-hour training session every evening, Monday to Thursday. Note that the time and venue of the evening trainings varies slightly from day to day. The extremely intensive option, reserved for kendoka in bogu, consists of a 3-hour session every morning plus the aforementioned 2-hour session every evening.
