King's M2 Takes Out Lower Mays Category
Another good term opener saw King's M2 take first place in the Lower Mays category of the Cambridge Winter Head to Head.
Race Reports
M1 8+ (report by Adam Bristow)
King's M1 made a decent start to the Lent Term this weekend, with a reasonable performance at the Winter Head to Head. In the absence of our regular stern pair, our first run was a good technical row, but a bit casual at a low rate of 32. The second run was more dynamic with higher ratings and better responses to pushes. Nonetheless, the overall feeling was that the crew didn't lay down much of its available grunt, and this is clearly something we'll want to address over the coming weeks. Queens' dominated the Mays 1st Division, making clear the challenges we face for bumps in a few weeks' time.

Race Reports
WNov A 8+ (report by Alice Moore)
After freezing our socks off marshalling in the rain, singing to keep our spirits up, we made a reasonable start. Unfortunately, this was not to last. Very quickly a few killer crabs sent us hurtling into the bank. However, we managed to stay focussed and our second start was much better. Throughout the rest of the race everyone pulled out all the stops to make up for lost time and settled into a good rhythm. Urged on by an enthusiastic bank party, our motivational cox and the men’s novice crew, who’d waited for us at the boat house after their race that morning, we overcame the initial knock to our morale and put in some good effort. It’s a shame we were playing catch up for most of the race, there were moments of really nice rowing when we came together as a team.

Race Report
WNov A 8+ (report by Anne Boulton)
The day of the Clare Novices Regatta was so cold that marshalling involved giving warm-up exercises over the cox-box! Consequently, spirits were high for our first race against Wolfson A. The crew made a quick, clean start in spite of the wind which had picked up and, settling into a decent rhythm, we soon began to pull away. Then, disaster struck and we began to drift with the wind towards the tow path race lane. It was a lot stronger than anticipated and, having not rowed in such conditions before, was difficult to recover. But the crew didn't let it unsettle them and rowed through it, managing to get it back at the last second. And thanks to a sympathetic umpire we were given the victory that the girls very much deserved. Our second race was against Jesus A, in which our slightly less energetic start against the powerful first few strokes from Jesus put them ahead of us early on. The crew once again found a good rhythm and were making good use of all the weeks of training, but fatigue and a few crabs had sneaked in and try as we could, we couldn't make up the distance. All in all, there were some really promising moments, as well as real team work and determination.

Race Report
WNov A 8+ (report by Elizabeth Lawn)
We set out for Emma Sprints in high spirits, dressed appropriately as a chocolate bar in purple t-shirts with C A D B U R Y ' S written on the backs, and D A I R Y M I L K across our fronts. In the first round, we came up against LMBC II, (who weren't dressed up... poor effort). It was a windy day, and the marshall began the race very quickly before we were all ready for it, meaning that our start was very ragged indeed. Nevertheless, we'd picked it up and found a nice rhythm before long, and the first third of the race was very promising, although LMBC were long gone and we failed to sustain our rhythm towards the end. On the way back down we raced another "non-winner", which was Tit Hall, dressed as Dalmatians. After more warning and consequently a much better start, we found a nice rhythm off the wind and stuck to it, and, with some great motivation from our cox, and good support from the bank, managed to pull past Tit Hall despite a blade crash and take it home nice and comfortably for King's. There were some really promising moments in both races and some good committment showed in the boat... it was a shame that we didn't win the fancy dress competition!

Strong Showing from King's Men at the University IVs
The University IVs races took place last week, with both King's Men's crews pushing through to the semi-finals.
Race Reports
M1 4+ (report by Cornelius Halladay-Garrett)
vs. Fitzwilliam M1 (Quarter Final)
We expected this to be a difficult race. Fitz were the previous year’s winners, and were definitively thought of as one of the favourites for this year. Consequently, we knew we had our work cut out if we were to hold them off.
The race began very well. We were on the upstream station, so were able to see Fitwilliam behind us. When the gun went, we got off to a slightly better start than they did, winding up to 45 over five strokes, and settling in to race rhythm of 35. As we came up towards First Post Corner, we really began to get into our stride, and kept the boat spinning along nicely. Kat took a good line into the corner, and we had a very effective push and lift out of it, which took the rate back up to 36. Another quick lift around Grassy Corner, and we were in a good position to make a push on Plough Reach. This is where the race was won. We put in an excellent push for ten strokes, holding our length while increasing the power. As we passed the posts on Plough reach, we were seven seconds ahead.
Coming on to the Long Reach, we were hit by windy conditions, which temporarily gave our opponents the advantage. However, we kept the stroke long, and put in some bursts as we closed in on the finish line. An excellent final push took us over the line to beat Fitzwilliam by seven seconds.
vs. Queens' M1 (Semi Final)
Queens' have been our main rivals this term. They beat us by only a second in the Autumn Head when we rowed in eights, so we knew that this was going to be a very close race. This time round we had the downstream station, meaning so we couldn’t see our opponents, instead having to rely on our cox to tell us their position.
We got off to quite a good start, although it didn’t feel quite as dynamic or aggressive as the previous race. Our race rhythm was also not quite as sharp, and we settled to a rate of 34 strokes per minute. We had some good pushes as we came round the corners, and started to make up a bit of ground on Plough Reach. However, we never quite regained the composure of the previous race, and struggled to keep the rate around 34.
We made a series of pushes as we came down the Long Reach, but there was little we could do to eat into Queens' lead. They saw their opportunity, and walked away, to win by 7.5 seconds. Still, we had a good race, and they were an excellent crew. On the day, we just weren’t quite able to match them. Our rowers and cox did a very good job trying though.

King's M1 Edged Out by Queens' in the Cambridge Autumn Head
The King's men made a strong start to the season yesterday, recording the second fastest time for a college boat in the Cambridge Autumn Head. After a comfortable wind-up off the start, the crew held a solid 33 to 34 strokes per minute the full length of the 2600-metre course. The men achieved a few explosive lifts out of the corners, which, coupled with a good racing line, saw them to the finish line only one second behind the boys from Queens'. While some technical precision was lost in the last few hundred metres, the level of commitment never wavered. The crew looks forward to building on this early success in the coming weeks.
