Race Reports
M1 8+ (report by Cornelius Halladay-Garrett)
Bedford Head was our first off-Cam race this term, and, with bumps only a few weeks away, was our chance to get some good race-pace practice. Being only 2km, we didn't really have an in-depth race plan; we decided to just go as fast as possible and see what sort of result we could achieve.
We got off to a pretty good start, achieving a rate of 44 coming out of the wind. We quickly settled down into our race pace rhythm of around 37 strokes per minute, and started to slowly close the gap between us and the boat ahead. The first 1000m were technically pretty good, although lacked a little of the power we've had previously. A lift call coming under the half way bridge saw the rate come up and the boat speed increase. However, the increase in power made us lose a little bit of rhythm, and the boat didn't feel quite as stable as it had. By this stage, we were quite close to the boat ahead and were rowing in some choppy water. Still, it's all good practice for Bumps!
A final burst 200m from the end saw a really good response from the crew, and we really accelerated towards the line, coming home in 6:22, putting us 6th in the IM3 division. There is still more to work on until Bumps, but I think the result was a reasonable one.

Race Report
W1 8+ (report by Sarah Williams)
Having several crew changes at the start of the term, we had got a couple of solid weeks of training in and were ready to go out and show the rest of the river what we were made of. We had a slight technical issue on the way down - the rudder string snapped - but we stopped and worked out we should be OK with it as it was, so carried on anyway. Because of this, the row down was slightly more tense than we would have hoped, but by the end we were back into our crew rhythm and ready to go.
The race was from the Little Bridge to the Railings - so just around 1.2km. We had a really strong start and hit a nice rhythm going down First Post Reach. The commitment in the water was good and we were keeping the length well as a crew. Unfortunately it went a bit scrappy on Plough Reach when we were tiring, and we didn’t quite lift the rating back up to where we had been, so lost time in the second half. The pressure was still strong though, and we finished well. The times show we are definitely up there with the crews around us in Bumps, so we just have to make the most of the next few weeks and see what we can do!

King's M2 Takes Out Lower Mays Category
Another good term opener saw King's M2 take first place in the Lower Mays category of the Cambridge Winter Head to Head.
Race Reports
M1 8+ (report by Adam Bristow)
King's M1 made a decent start to the Lent Term this weekend, with a reasonable performance at the Winter Head to Head. In the absence of our regular stern pair, our first run was a good technical row, but a bit casual at a low rate of 32. The second run was more dynamic with higher ratings and better responses to pushes. Nonetheless, the overall feeling was that the crew didn't lay down much of its available grunt, and this is clearly something we'll want to address over the coming weeks. Queens' dominated the Mays 1st Division, making clear the challenges we face for bumps in a few weeks' time.

Race Reports
W1 8+ (report by Sarah Williams)
Having made a few crew switches since the Winter Head, preparation for Fairbairns had been quite interrupted due to illness and various other things. Nevertheless, we were ready for it on the day and determined to do ourselves justice. We went off hard from the start, and made up ground on the LMBC crew ahead of us. We got to within a length by the end of the reach but then didn’t get any closer. The response in the crew was greatly improved and we really gave it everything to the end. The final result wasn’t quite as good as we had hoped, but there’s lots to work on for next term!
WNov A 8+ (report by Alice Moore)
After freezing our socks off marshalling in the rain, singing to keep our spirits up, we made a reasonable start. Unfortunately, this was not to last. Very quickly a few killer crabs sent us hurtling into the bank. However, we managed to stay focussed and our second start was much better. Throughout the rest of the race everyone pulled out all the stops to make up for lost time and settled into a good rhythm. Urged on by an enthusiastic bank party, our motivational cox and the men’s novice crew, who’d waited for us at the boat house after their race that morning, we overcame the initial knock to our morale and put in some good effort. It’s a shame we were playing catch up for most of the race, there were moments of really nice rowing when we came together as a team.

Race Report
WNov A 8+ (report by Anne Boulton)
The day of the Clare Novices Regatta was so cold that marshalling involved giving warm-up exercises over the cox-box! Consequently, spirits were high for our first race against Wolfson A. The crew made a quick, clean start in spite of the wind which had picked up and, settling into a decent rhythm, we soon began to pull away. Then, disaster struck and we began to drift with the wind towards the tow path race lane. It was a lot stronger than anticipated and, having not rowed in such conditions before, was difficult to recover. But the crew didn't let it unsettle them and rowed through it, managing to get it back at the last second. And thanks to a sympathetic umpire we were given the victory that the girls very much deserved. Our second race was against Jesus A, in which our slightly less energetic start against the powerful first few strokes from Jesus put them ahead of us early on. The crew once again found a good rhythm and were making good use of all the weeks of training, but fatigue and a few crabs had sneaked in and try as we could, we couldn't make up the distance. All in all, there were some really promising moments, as well as real team work and determination.

Race Report
WNov A 8+ (report by Elizabeth Lawn)
We set out for Emma Sprints in high spirits, dressed appropriately as a chocolate bar in purple t-shirts with C A D B U R Y ' S written on the backs, and D A I R Y M I L K across our fronts. In the first round, we came up against LMBC II, (who weren't dressed up... poor effort). It was a windy day, and the marshall began the race very quickly before we were all ready for it, meaning that our start was very ragged indeed. Nevertheless, we'd picked it up and found a nice rhythm before long, and the first third of the race was very promising, although LMBC were long gone and we failed to sustain our rhythm towards the end. On the way back down we raced another "non-winner", which was Tit Hall, dressed as Dalmatians. After more warning and consequently a much better start, we found a nice rhythm off the wind and stuck to it, and, with some great motivation from our cox, and good support from the bank, managed to pull past Tit Hall despite a blade crash and take it home nice and comfortably for King's. There were some really promising moments in both races and some good committment showed in the boat... it was a shame that we didn't win the fancy dress competition!
