In the run-up to their 50th Anniversary Year, the Cambridge University Gilbert and Sullivan Society returns to the Arts Theatre with a fresh and exciting production of the timeless comic opera, HMS Pinafore. With talented, young, professional director Poppy Burton-Morgan at the helm and featuring the cream of Cambridge’s student talent, this year’s show promises to be bigger and better than ever before!
Transported to the roaring twenties from its original Victorian setting, HMS Pinafore tells the story of Captain Corcoran and his crew aboard their saucy ship, The Pinafore. Foremast lad, Ralph Rackstraw, is in love with the Captain's daughter, Josephine, who herself has caught the eye of the Lord of the Admiralty, Sir Joseph Porter, and now faces the decision whether to marry for love or for reason. Add to that the crafty old sailor Dick Deadeye, mysterious bumboat woman Little Buttercup, Sir Joseph's loyal contingent of sisters, cousins and aunts and a crew of horn-piping sailors and Captain Corcoran soon has his hands full keeping order on deck!
Featuring classic songs and witty, sparkling dialogue, HMS Pinafore established Gilbert and Sullivan as the premier writing duo of their day. After well over a century delighting audiences around the world, it has become one of the most loved and endearing shows ever written.
