Joining the CU G&S society is possibly the single most significant event that you can perform in your entire life. It is on a par with such life-changing events as birth, death and finals. No-one experiences the marvellous works of Sir William Schwenk Gilbert and Sir Arthur Seymour Sullivan unaffected.
The society supports all levels of commitment. The most regular type of event is the Sing-Through. At these very friendly occasions, volunteers perform the solo parts from an operetta and everyone joins in for the choruses, irrespective of musical ability. Sing-Throughs happen at least twice a term and are really good fun. Many people just come along to Sing-Throughs and don't get involved in the performances.
The society has around two hundred members and some sort of event every fortnight, on average during term. We also need people interested in playing in the orchestra, working backstage, making costumes, programme design and so on. Other society events may include a freshers' performance, an annual dinner and a non-G&S musical in the ADC during Michaelmas term.
Yes, that's right we don't just do G&S, in recent years we have also performed Candide, Sweeney Todd, Fiddler on The Roof, Bitter Sweet and Grease to name but a few.
Our Squash is held on the first Sunday of the Michaelmas term, usually. Simply an even more manic singthrough than usual, this is a chance for people to experience the fun of being a member, before having to pay up!
