Freshers Show

The Freshers Show, Patience is in Robinson Auditorium from 26th to 29th November. Cambridge University Gilbert & Sullivan Society are proud to present this witty Wildean musical comedy as their 2008 Freshers' Show. In a walled castle garden, twenty lovesick maidens relive the days of yore, forsaking the love of the Dragoon Guards as they pine for the posturing aesthetic poet Bunthorne. He in turn longs for the village milkmaid, Patience, who knows nothing about love. But when her childhood sweetheart, Archibald Grosvenor, another poet and an Apostle of Beauty, shows up, calamity is unleashed on their idyllic village, and the dragoons must resort to desperate measures to win back their ladies.

Poking fun at Oscar Wilde, Algernon Swinburne and their contemporaries, Patience was Gilbert & Sullivan's second-biggest success, and is no less relevant or charming today. This frothy musical romp combines a sparkling score, a delightful gallery of characters and the beautiful evocation of a bygone medieval neverland, where damsels swooned and sighed for their sweethearts, and where love could turn the world upside-down.
