FRIENDLY ASSASSINS (FRIEAS)

What is Assassins? Assassins is about friendly "killing" other consenting assassins with safe and unalarming toy weapony.

Cambridge has had Assassins for almost 20 years, during which there have constantly been not one but two major Assassins traditions. Assassins as primarily "gaming" and Assassins as primarily *Welfare*. Many people have been a bit of both, because in Cambridge we've almost always gotten on well enough to work together as a more or less coherent whole :)

We are Assassins as Welfare. In Cambridge, assassins who at least partly value Welfare by abiding by the Golden Promise of ALWAYS being friendly as well as responsible during and over assassins business have long been called Gold Assassins. In Cambridge, the responsible part is non-optional: all of Cambridge's assassins societies require it. Current and recent Gold Assassins organizations are us (FRIEAS) and the All Souls Assassins Service (ALSO): short assassins events and socials. Almost all of these are or were also regularly involved in the Assassins Guild, including a sizeable proportion of the past 4 years' more active players and recruiters. It is Golds too who for years been making up for the Guild only one post (undemocratically chosen), by welcoming anyone that wishes to be part of running some assassins activities to take up a Socrep post with us (so here you get to represent yourself). We do so by guaranteeing you can publicize what you are running and providing facilities for you; as of July 2011, we do now require you to stay clearly inside the bounds of the Golden Promise if you want to be a Socrep that we support. Email frieas-admins@srcf.ucam.org if at all interested in helping to run (Socrep) any part of Friendly Assassins or to sign up as a participant; both require making the Golden Promise! :)

Why Assassins? To us it is about Continually Meeting New People, Making Friends and Inclusion of all Friendly and Responsible People.

In particular, we have observed how it is a very useful activity in these ways for the New (Freshers)!, the Shy and the Different.

In fact, Assassins-type things are essentially unique in how useful they are in this way to New, Shy and Different people at a (especially campus) university.

This has also been remarked upon both as a truth and as a major motivator by senior figures in Assassins' more recent close cousin, Humans versus Zombies.

Those words above, "friendly", "consenting", "safe" and "unalarming" are all essential for Assassins to work at all well as a social activity. We are not here just talking about a bunch of people looking for similar people to form a closed group. We are talking about an activity that is continually accommodating to New, Shy and Different people, via consenting to one's everyday life being in many places open to brief surprise 1 on 1 encounters made out of purely harmless fun, in which what works counts rather than what is "held to be cool by some pre-existing group", provided that it stays within friendly and safe and non-alarming to the surrounding public.

Particularly due to a few too many problems within other assassins' activities, FRIEAS wish to occasionally run assassins activities of a particularly friendly and welfare-conscious nature. While we understand that some other assassins coose to do differently, we have every right to ourselves practise Assassins as primarily Welfare. Live and let live, we say. Let's leave it at that, and focus on what we do recommend :) Our own activities are *always* No Killing without Friendliness!

* What does Friendly Assassins do? At this moment in time,

Our Proposed Game for Very Early Michaelmas ,

Its Rules . The serious conduct rules section of these applies to during all of our activities and to all discussions about our activities.

More about what FRIEAS do will appear here.

FRIEAS is the new name and updated form of 1) that part of Gold Assassins that had, until recently, been in loose partnership with the Assassins Guild for almost six years The relative lack of credit we got for all our hard work in that partnership is why some people not new to Cambridge may not have heard of Gold Assassins before, despite how many of the more prominent players, organizers and recruiters e.g. last year these were at least part-representative of Gold Assassins. 2) most of the surviving resources of the Aurors' Office, which used to e.g. go into Varsity Assassins. We ask that you respect the wide diversity of opinions between a number of the current Gold organizers.
