The Fletcher Players is the drama society of Corpus Christi College. Named after John Fletcher, alumnus of Corpus and Jacobean playwright, our aim is to make theatre as accessible and enjoyable as possible for all members of our college and the university beyond.
It is not unusual for us to stage up to six shows every term, ranging from new writing to traditional classics, comedy, cutting edge political drama and even dance. The type of shows we produce depends on the interests of the current student body: we are here to encourage new ideas and make them happen.
Highlights of our annual programme include the Freshers’ Play, written and produced entirely by Corpus first years and Smorgasbord, a festival of new writing which we co-produce with our friends at the Caius College drama society, Shadwell. Work from Smorgasbord has gone on to play at the Edinburgh Festival and win National prizes for writing. These events, as well as all our other work, give new writers, directors and actors - many with absolutely no previous experience - the chance to get involved in the incredibly important and constructive life of theatre.
The Fletcher Players also have an important role to play in the University drama scene through the Corpus Christi College Playroom, a prestigious university venue with a strong reputation for programming exciting and experimental student drama. Not content with that, our productions have also taken place in recent years at the ADC Theatre, Corpus college grounds (May Week show) and in London. We are proud of being an open and friendly student society whilst also having unique, strong links with the world of professional theatre. Whether you want to write, direct, act, produce or simply be involved in the running of a theatre, the Fletcher Players can offer you the opportunity to get involved in drama. Please contact the relevant member of our committee if you wish to find out more information regarding any aspect of our work.
