A New Venture...

Fitzwilliam Chamber Opera, the only college-based opera group in Cambridge, is a exciting new venture developed under the direction of Michael Downes (Music Director, Fitzwilliam College) and Sally Bradshaw, a renowned soprano and singing teacher with strong links to the College

Our inaugural production of Xerxes will be directed by Sally Bradshaw and accompanied by an orchestra led by the Fitzwilliam String Quartet, the College's Ensemble in Residence. The production will be conducted by Fitzwilliam music student Fergus Macleod. Further performances of Xerxes are planned for April 2008 in the Theatre Royal, Bury St Edmunds.

The company's future plans include further fully staged productions of Baroque and Classical operas, performances of specially commissioned contemporary works, and workshop presentations of operatic scenes and excerpts. Our aim is to give singers, instrumentalists, and those interested in the direction and production of opera the chance to gain experience of the art-form under the close guidance of leading professionals.

We are delighted that Humphrey Burton CBE, the eminent broadcaster and musical biographer and a Fitzwilliam alumnus, has agreed to become Patron of Fitzwilliam Chamber Opera.
