Joining Information
Who can join?
Any student in Cambridge (Cambridge University or Anglia Ruskin University) can join, whether or not you have previously been a member of St John Ambulance, The Red Cross or St Andrews Ambulance Association.
What previous experience do you need?
No previous experience is required, you just need an interest in first aid. All necessary training and supervision will be provided. Obviously it is easier if you already have a first aid certificate - many people join after completing our "Lifesaver" course. Even if you are not particularly interested in first aid there are always positions available such as Treasurer, Secretary and Transport.
What training is provided?
- First Aid At Work
- Manual Handling/Casualty Handling/Patient Handling
- Radio Communications
- Fundamentals of Care Course (Various aspects of caring for patients)
- Ambulance Aid Level 2 (Emergency Transport Attendant)
- Ambulance Driving training
- Even defibrillator training...
- PLUS lots of incidents for you to practise your skills at on mock
casualties!
- We also have speakers, often health care professionals
Public Duties
Duties we cover include:
- May Balls at many colleges
- Rowing events
- Concerts at the Cambridge Corn Exchange
- Airshows at Duxford
- Strawberry Fair, Midsummer Fair
- Assisting at big events like the London Marathon and the Notting Hill Carnival
and many other events.
What time commitment is involved?
There are weekly training evenings on Tuesdays during undergraduate term time, where attendance is rarely mandatory! You can then spend as much or as little time as you like going on public duties and to our social events. The only thing you have to attend is an annual Basic Life Support refresher which only takes one evening!
If, after reading the above information you decide that you may want to join CUFAS or want any more information then then please e-mail the Committee. You may also sign up to our mailing list for those interested in joining.
