The Forum is a student-run society based at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. We want to suss out where the key social and political challenges facing our generation lie, and how we can tackle them in our own lives. The Forum is a space for critical thinking in a relaxed, living room atmosphere. No prior knowledge is expected, and no values or assumptions are taken for granted. Rather, the emphasis is on learning from each other and coming to grips with the issues at hand.

Therefore, we engage with a single theme for an entire term (the Lent 2010 theme is “The Politics of Development Aid”), exploring it in three different kinds of events – all of which include liberal amounts of wine:

  • The Living Room – speaker events, taking the form of an open discussion.
  • The Rat Race - career events with a speaker professionally involved in the field currently under examination.

The Forum aims to be more than a mere talking shop. We want to develop the desire, understanding and confidence to live deliberately, aware of the impact of our daily choices. So, we invite speakers to focus on practical forms of action. Also, “The Rat Race” series is intended to inform our own career decisions and highlight possible internships.

The Forum aims to be a welcoming, user-run enterprise, so we invite everyone to take part in its ongoing re-creation. If you would like to be involved in putting on events, helping with publicity, and deciding what direction The Forum takes, we would like to hear from you (lcd37@cam.ac.uk).

See you there.
