Senior Organ Scholar - Benjamin Chewter
Benjamin Chewter is the Senior Organ Scholar of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where he directs the music in the Chapel and is an Academic Scholar reading Music. He started learning the organ at the age of 7 and was educated at Christ's Hospital School, (where he later became the Organ Scholar), studying organ with Adrian Bawtree and Joanna Marsh, piano and conducting with John Forster, and 'cello with Alexander Boyarsky. During his gap year, he was Organ Scholar at Canterbury Cathedral (where he regularly accompanied the Cathedral Choir) and was Assistant Organist at the King's School, Canterbury. As an organist and keyboard player, he has performed at venues including the Purcell Room in London, St Paul’s Cathedral, the 2003 Sherborne Festival, Hildesheim Cathedral (N Germany), the 2002 Three Choirs Festival, Bruges Cathedral, and various Cambridge colleges. He first studied conducting whilst at school, and founded
a choir during his final year - he currently studies orchestral conducting
with Michael Rose and choral conducting with Christopher Robinson. At
Cambridge, he conducts the Emmanuel College Chapel Choir, the Emmanuel
Chorus and the Orchestra, with recent performances including the Dvorak
‘New World’ Symphony, the Faure and Durufle Requiems and the
Bach St John Passion. He was awarded the diploma of Associateship of the
Royal College of Organists in 2003, and he currently studies organ repertoire
and improvisation with David Briggs.
