The Club
Emmanuel Boat Club (E.B.C.) has been established for well over a century and is one of the traditional Cambridge college boat clubs. Its boat house, in which both Hughes Hall and CCAT boat clubs hire space, is situated between Pembroke and Downing boat houses beside Pembroke footbridge. It was recently extended in 1994 to become one of the largest and most modern facilities on the Cam.
The Boat Club remains very fortunate in being able to boast a high contingent of experienced coaches, both from within the past and present Emmanuel boat clubs and from outside the immediate College. We are very grateful for all their efforts (in all conditions) and sometimes against all odds!
The boat club is always keen to hear from old members. If you would like to learn more about the current activities of the club or just keep in contact please feel free to e-mail the captain or write to us at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, CB2 3AP.
The Henley Fund
The EBC Henley Fund Association was set up in 1950 to promote the general health and fitness of students at Emmanuel College Cambridge through rowing. The Association fund raises and maintains a fund from which to make grants in aid of the Emmanuel Boat Club for training camps outside term time on and off the Cam. it also provides support for members representing Emmanuel Boat Club at Henley and at such other regattas outside Cambridge as may from time to time be approved. It may also support composite crews, providing the name Emmanuel College appears on the entry, with the contribution pro rated to the number of Emmanuel rowers in the crew. The Committee is made up of past EBC members and comprises (with matric years): Zan Church ('85); Hugh Dullage ('95); Mike Edgar ('56); Belinda Gordon ('94); Dave Hampton ('77); Richard Hopkirk ('97); John Horner ('70), Tom Killick ('91); Malcolm Mennie ('55); Ted Portlock ('58); Minnie Rogers ('91); David Sprague ('71); Andrew Walker ('81), Dr. Finian Leeper and Lord Wilson
Information for Prospective Members
Rowing is the most popular student sport in Cambridge. Each September at Emmanuel almost half of the new intake of students decide to have a go, and during this first term Novices make up over half of the clubs' active rowing membership.
As with all colleges in Cambridge, less than one in ten of our new members have any rowing experience at all, so it is not surprising that the club has a well established Novice program designed to develop individuals of all fitness levels into highly proficient oarsmen and women.
Experienced rowers who join the club are normally placed straight into the senior squad where they can expect an intensive, effective training program and a high quality of coaching. A normal training week for the 1st Senior VIIIs will include four to six outings and two to four land training sessions.
The club also encourages members to trial for the University squads, and has had an increasing presence in the varsity boats in recent years.
Facilities
Members of the club are privileged to have access to some of the finest training
facilities on the Cam:
- A full set of free weights and machines
- 5 Ergos including a Row-Perfect
- Hi-Fi System
- Spacious changing facilities and showers
- Comfortable coaching room, newly furnished and equipped with a TV and video
- Video camera to assist with training
The college also employs a full time boatman, Paul Collins, as well as a cleaner.
Racing
The majority of racing is intercollegiate. Events of all sizes are run on the Cam throughout the year and Emmanuel participates in as many as possible. At the end of each term there is always a big event which will have been the primary focus during the term:
- Michaelmas Term (October to December) sees the Fairbairn Cup, a 4300m time-trial utilising almost the entire distance between Jesus Lock and Baitsbite Lock.
- Lent Term (January-March) and May Term (April-June) both have Bumping Races.
The club also makes a number of trips to external events, these range from local head races and regattas to more prestigious events such as:
- The Fours' Head
- The Head of the River Race and Women's Head of the River Race
- Henley Royal Regatta
