Downing Dramatic Society Venues

These are the venues in College most commonly used for DDS shows. There are other rooms available which might suit - see the Conference Office's information for ideas.

The Upper Howard Building

The Upper Howard building can seat up to 160 people, and you can move the seating to whatever configuration you require (subject to fire safety regulations). There is a stage at one end of the room and there are fixed lighting bars on the ceiling. The technical information page includes more technical details about the Howard Building.

The Great Hall

Features no fixed sound or lighting equipment, although it can be brought in and rigged temporarily. Apart from 13A sockets, power connections are available in the neighbouring kitchens but their use will require negotiation with the catering department.

The Paddock Marquee

During the last few weeks of Easter Term, the conference office normally hires a marquee, positioned on the college Paddock, which can be booked by shows. 13A sockets are normally provided for running sound systems for garden parties, and these may be sufficient for your show's requirements. More power can be provided if the college electrician is notified in advance.

The Fellows' Garden

This is another venue normally used in Mayweek. A simple outdoor area with benches and trees.

The College Chapel

"Rosencrantz & Guildernstern Are Dead" and "Titus Andronicus" took place in here. Long, relatively thin aisle down the centre of two seating areas, with the altar and one end. The Chapel's lighting system is not theatre-style but can still be manipulated to create a wide array of atmospheres.
