  The Danby Society

            The Scientific Society of Downing College, Cambridge




    Aims of the Society and membership criteria

  1. The Danby Society's aim is to provide intellectual stimulation and social interaction for its members and represent them in dealings with the college.
  2. Any Downing College undergraduate or postgraduate studying either Natural Science, Computer Science, Mathematics or Engineering is eligible to join the Society.

    Funding of the Society

  3. The Society will be funded by an annual levy on all members, funding from the college JCR and entrance fees from events. It may also be funded by relevant commercial sponsorship.
  4. The society's funds will be held in a bank account. The society will not invest directly in high-risk investments.

    Officers of the Society and rules pertaining to them

  5. a) There should be a committee elected annually consisting of six officers: Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, Publicity Officer, Social Secretary and Sponsorship officer. The last three positions may be held jointly by a pair of members.

    b) Any member of the Society may stand for election to any of the posts.

    c) Officers of the Society will not receive any salary from society funds.

    d) No officer of the Society should directly benefit from his/her position. Any officer found to have done so, following a suitable appeals procedure, will be barred from membership of the Society and may face disciplinary action from the college authorities.

  6. There will be a president of the Society, who will be a fellow of the college. He will have ultimate control of the Society's affairs, but will not interfere with the committee on a day-to-day basis.

    Further rules

  7. The committee will undertake to arrange at least one talk and one social event per term for the Society. These will not necessarily be exclusively for members of the Society.
  8. There will be an annual dinner to be held in Lent Term each year.
  9. The funds of the Society will be used for the benefit of the whole membership.
  10. All expenditure must be authorised by the Chairman and Treasurer to guard against impropriety.
  11. The Society will not support any political party, either verbally or financially.
  12. The rules of the Society can only be changed by putting a proposal to the entire membership and with the approval of the president.
