Os ydych yn ddisgybl ysgol uwchradd o Gymru, neu yn ddisgybl prifysgol sydd am wneud astudiaethau graddedig, ac yn meddwl ymgeisio am le yng Nghaergrawnt, mae'n debyg fod ambell i amheuaeth yn croesi'ch meddwl am yr holl beth. Efallai, o'r holl amheuon, un sy'n eich poeni mwyaf yw'r ofn na fyddech yn ffitio mewn yng Nghaergrawnt, ac y byddech chi, fel disgybl 'cyffredin' o Gymru, yn teimlo fel estron ymysg llu o Saeson hyderus o ysgolion preifat. Wel, mae'n amser i wirio'r ddelwedd yma. Ydi, mae'n wir fod gan Gaergrawnt ambell i unigolyn gorhyderus, ond mae'r mwyafrif mawr o ddisgyblion yn union fel chi, ac yr un mor ofnus o deimlo'n rhy "gyffredin" neu ddim yn ddigon galluog i fod yma. Ond credwch chi ni, os ydych wedi gwneud yn eithaf da yn eich TGAU, ac yn disgwyl canlyniadau da yn eich lefel A, plîs, plîs, plîs ymgeisiwch am le yma! Peidiwch â meddwl fod y sglein a'r hyder sydd gan rhai o'r bobl eraill sy'n ceisio yn eu gwneud yn well na chi: mae'n ddigon tebyg, o dan yr arwyneb, eu bod dim clyfrach na chi, ac mae'r broses gyfweld wedi'i chynllunio i weld y ffaith yna. Mae'r brifysgol o hyd yn edrych i ddenu pobl o grwpiau sydd ddim fel arfer yn ymgeisio i Gaergrawnt, ac mae disgyblion o Gymru yn un o'r grwpiau yna. Fel cenedl o bobl ffantastig, mae 'na ddiffyg cynrychiolaeth ohonom yma, felly dewch yn eich blaenau, cerwch amdani! Os oes gennych unrhyw gwestiynau penodol am ymgeisio, ac rydych eisio clywed gan ddisgyblion Cymraeg yma yng Nghaergrawnt, peidiwch oedi i gysylltu efo un ohonom o'r pwyllgor. Am fwy o wybodaeth, gallwch ddarllen islaw am fywyd yma yng Nghaergrawnt, o safbwynt disgyblion Cymraeg.

If you are a high school student from Wales, or a university student planning on doing postgraduate studies, and are thinking of applying to Cambridge, it's quite likely that you've got more than a few concerns about the whole thing. Perhaps, of all your worries, is the fear that you won't fit in at Cambridge, and that you, as an 'ordinary' Welsh student, will feel like an outsider amongst a mass of confident, private schooled English kids. Well, time to set you straight. Yes it's true that Cambridge takes in more than it's fair share of over-confident types, but the vast majority of students will be just like you, and probably just as terrified of feeling too ordinary or too stupid to be here. But believe us, if you've done pretty well in your GCSEs, and are on course to get good grades in your A-levels, then please, please, please have a go at applying to Cambridge! Don't think that just because you don't have the outward polish and shine of some of the other people who apply, that you won't get in: most of those people, underneath that well cultivated facade, are no smarter than you, and the interview process is designed to see exactly that. The University is always looking to get people in from groups that don't usually apply to Cambridge, and students from Wales are one of those groups. As a nation of brilliant people, we're under-represented here, so go on, get that application form! If you've got any specific questions about applying, and want to hear from Welsh students here at Cambridge, feel free to email any of us on the committee. If you want to know more, you can read below about life here in Cambridge, from the perspective of Welsh students.

BYWYD FEL MYFYRIWR ISRADDEDIG - LIFE AS AN UNDERGRADUATE

"Nid gwaith yw popeth yng Nghaergrawnt. Ceir cyfleoedd anghygoel i bawb yma: boed ym meysydd chwaraeon, cerddoriaeth, gwleidyddiaeth, crefydd, dawnsio, yfed, MontyPython, neu gyfuniad o'r rhain, chi biau'r dewis. Bydd cyfle i chi ymuno â phob math o gymdeithasau gwallgof yn ystod wythnos y glas! Er nad yw adloniant Llundain i gael yng Nghaergrawnt, ceir digon o glybiau, bwytai, tafarndai gwych, a bariau ym mhob un o'r tua 25 coleg. Yn fwy pwysig yw'r bobl rydych chi'n cwrdd â nhw. Mae bywyd cymdeithasol gwych ar gael; byddwch yn gwneud ffrindiau am oes yng Nghaergrawnt."

"Cambridge isn't all about work. The opportunities available here are incredible: whether you're keen on pursuing an interest in sport, music, politics, religion, dancing, drinking, Monty Python, or all of these together, then you'll be spoilt for choice. You'll have the opportunity to sign up for all sorts of crazy student societies during freshers' week! Cambridge night life isn't London, but there are a number of clubs, restaurants, some pretty good pubs, and bars in all of the 25 or so colleges. Perhaps more important than where you go are the people you meet. There's a great social life available; at Cambridge you'll make friends for life."

BYWYD FEL MYFYRIWR GRADDEDIG - LIFE AS A POSTGRADUATE

"Ddes i Gaegrawnt yn 1999 i astudio Gwyddoniaeth Naturiol, gan arbennigo yn Ffiseg.  Graddiais yn haf 2003 gyda BA a MSci.  Cefais gymaint o flas ar astudio yma, ystyriais o ddifrif aros yn y Brifysgol i wneud gwaith ymchwil Ffiseg.

Penderfyniad hawdd oedd aros yng Nghaergrawnt.  Mae Labordy’r Cavendish yn le sy’n croesawu pobl o bedwar ban y byd, ac yn enwog o fewn maes Ffiseg.  Mae yna ddigon o gyfleon felly i fynd i bob math o wledydd ar gynhadleddau!  Fel myfyrwraig Doethuriaeth, mae gen i amserlen hyblyg.  Rwy fel arfer yn y labordy yn ystod oriau gwaith, a rwy’n aml yn rhydd ar benwythnosau.  Mae’r mwyafrif o fyfyrwyr ymchwil yn derbyn grantiau hael a di-dreth, sy’n fwy na digon i dalu am gostau byw a ffîoedd coleg.  Gall myfyrwyr ymchwil atodi eu hincwm drwy ddysgu is-raddedigion neu oruwchwylio gwesi ymarferol o fewn y Brifysgol.  Mae gwneud Doethuriaeth yn ffordd arbennig o ddysgu sut i gyflawni gwaith technegol mewn maes sy’n eich ymddiddori, ac hefyd yn ffordd gwych o gael profiad dysgu Prifysgol.  Dydw i ddim yn meddwl y gellir dod o hyd i swydd arall sy’n eich galluogi i ddatblygu syniadau eich hun, byw bywyd myfyriwr a chael eich talu ar yr un pryd!

Mae yna ddigonedd o bethau i uwchraddedigion i’w wneud yng Nghaergrawnt.  Mae gan bob coleg sydd â graddedigion “MCR” sy’n trefnu adloniant, ciniawau a.y.y.b. – mae gan sefydliadau o’r fath rywbeth at ddant pawb.  Daw nifer o’r cyd-weithwyr yn y grwpiau ymchwil yn ffrindiau da, a gan fod ni’r uwchraddedigion yma am ran fwyaf o’r flwyddyn, mae’n hawdd dod i adnabod pobl sydd y tu fas i swigen cymdeithas y Brifysgol (pobl “go-iawn”!).  Mae Caergrawnt yn le gwych i astudio ac i weithio – rwy’ wrth fy modd yma."

Carys Lloyd, Myfyrwraig ymchwil Ffiseg yng Ngholeg yr Iesu.

"I first came up to Cambridge in 1999, where I studied Natural Sciences – specialising in Physics.  I received my BA and MSci degrees in the summer of 2003.  I enjoyed my time at Cambridge so much - the lifestyle, friendly atmosphere and excellent teaching – it definitely got me thinking about continuing at university to do research.

Staying on at Cambridge was an easy choice.  The Cavendish Laboratory has an open and inclusive atmosphere and is also highly regarded world-wide - which means that there are plenty of opportunities to travel to conferences all over the world (and to have some fun as well!)  Doing a PhD allows you to be fairly flexible with your time; I work throughout the week but can have most weekends free.  The majority of PhD students are given a generous (tax free!) grant to cover living costs and tuition fees.  You can supplement your income by teaching undergraduates or demonstrating in practical classes.  Doing a PhD is an ideal way of getting technical experience in a field that interests you as well as giving you University teaching experience.  I think you’d be hard-pressed to find any job that allows you to pursue your own ideas, live the Cambridge student lifestyle and still get paid!

There’s plenty for grads to do in Cambridge.  Socialising in your college’s MCR is a great way for meeting new friends, and research groups will be full of bright-eyed and bushy-tailed graduates (maybe not on Monday mornings though).  Grads are welcome to join any University society, and we often make friends outside the University since we’re here throughout the year.  Cambridge is a great place to be, and I am very happy to live and work here!"
